When can you plant radishes and should you do it in June?
Radish is one of the most popular root crops in Russia. It can be found in almost any garden. It is generally accepted that the planting of this culture is carried out from the beginning of April to the end of May. But what if the radish could not be planted on time, and can it be done in June?
When can you plant radishes?
The time when planting radishes is possible is not limited only to April and May. In addition to this period, most summer months are suitable for this process. Alas, June is the exception. The reason for this was the length of daylight hours this month.
The fact is that for the normal development of almost all root crops, it is necessary that the sun shines from 8 to 10 hours. In June, daylight hours are maximum and reach 14 hours. With such prolonged exposure to sunlight, radish practically does not develop its root, but immediately passes into the reproductive stage and begins to shoot an arrow.
Varieties
Due to the fact that the daylight hours in June are too long, in April-May it is advised to plant a variety belonging to the early type - such plants have time to get stronger and ripen before summer comes. If sowing radishes in the spring did not work out, then it is better to wait out a month and start planting later varieties. The difference between early root crops and late ones is that the latter, under the summer sun, go into the flowering stage a little later and have time to gain strength.
The spring varieties include such types of radish as "Early red" or "18 days". Several more varieties are provided for summer sowing. Due to the changed conditions, they will develop a little longer, but the root crops will eventually turn out to be larger. The latter include varieties:
- "Red Giant";
- "Octave";
- "Red Giant".
You can plant any of the varieties listed above until mid-August, but it should be understood that the shorter the interval from sowing to harvesting, the smaller the fruits will be. In addition to the fact that with proper care, summer radishes are somewhat larger than their early counterparts, they also have a longer shelf life and can last all summer. For example, the fruits of the "Red Giant" can be stored for up to 2 months in a cellar.
Landing conditions
In order to prevent radishes from blooming ahead of time, experts recommend planting in the summer in darkened areas of the garden. This is the main condition for the roots to be large and juicy.
As a last resort, if all the beds are in direct sunlight, planting can be carried out in the fall. This is facilitated by a reduction in daylight hours in September, which is why any type of radish simply cannot enter the breeding stage, but directs all the nutrients to the fruit. With proper care, whichever root crop is chosen, after harvesting it crunches when cut and releases a lot of juice. In this case, the structure of the pulp should not be fibrous and have voids.
Advice
When choosing a variety with white tips, such as "18 days" or "French breakfast", you need to take into account the fact that these roots, if they are in the soil for too long, begin to tend to hollowness.
Sowing radish
There are several methods suitable for planting radish seeds, depending on planting time and space available. However, there are several generalizing aspects. The most important of these is the presence of loose and moist soil, which the root crop loves very much.
Before starting planting, the soil must be prepared.To do this, it is dug up and mixed with rotted manure: one bucket per square meter. All clods must be broken, and then the planting area must be leveled. It is highly discouraged to use fresh manure. The procedure is best done in the fall.
In the big garden
Before planting in the first way, it is necessary to shed the earth well and make shallow (1 cm) rows in it. If you make them deeper, then the fruit may take an irregular shape. Seeds should be planted at intervals of at least 5 cm, spreading them out one by one. The distance between the beds should not be less than 10 cm. When the seedlings are in their places, the beds are covered with soil.
Advice
When all the seeds are covered, the soil should be lightly crushed with your hand so that the soil surrounds them on all sides. This will help the radish germinate faster.
Almost any variety will show the first sprouts already on the third or fourth day after sowing. This planting method is perfect if the choice of planting season fell on summer or spring. The fruits in this case will be the largest and most juicy, especially if, during growth, the crops are covered with foil from 5 pm until morning. However, this method will not work if the space on the site is rather small.
In a small area
For those who do not have a large garden, experts recommend a different method. Such a landing requires a special tool that can be built from available tools, such as boards. They must be sawn into bars one meter at a time and fastened parallel to each other so that there is a distance of 5 cm between their axes. Further, one-centimeter holes are drilled on each at a distance of 5 cm. As a result, you will get a seeder that will allow you to get a fairly dense seeding.
It is necessary to plant one seed in each hole, and then cover the structure with pre-prepared soil. With this method, only 1 m2 you can get up to 5 kg of crop using a large variety. The method is suitable for both spring and summer sowing.
During autumn sowing
Autumn late planting is carried out in the second half of October or early November on a flat area of soil. There should be sandy impurities on it. The presence of sandy loam is also allowed - provided that the land is at a slight slope towards the south or southeast side. In addition, the site must be protected from spring floods. Rowing is done in the same way as for sowing early varieties. It is necessary to plant a crop a little later.
The planting itself begins as soon as the first stable frosts appear. In this case, the variety must be hardy, and the seeds must be dry. The best time to start sowing is from 5 to 20 November. On top, instead of simple earth, peat or humus should be laid.
Care rules
Radish is not a particularly picky root crop, but it still needs care. So, after planting has been made, any variety must be watered every day. If this is not done, then the topsoil will quickly dry out, which will be fatal for most immature sprouts. In addition, radish loves when the soil around it is loose and free of weeds. To make your work easier, you can lay a two-centimeter layer of mulch on fresh soil, which can be peat or humus.
Outcome
The optimum soil moisture indicator for radish is within 80%, which is quite a lot. If this condition is not met and the soil has time to dry out, then as a result the fruits will be less juicy and with a bitter taste. Low humidity with high temperatures, which the summer in the middle lane is famous for, promotes early shooting.
Dense sunrises must be thinned out so that there is no more than one plant at a distance of 5 cm. Each variety has its own time frame from the first sprout to harvest.At the same time, you can overexpose the fruits in the ground for a maximum of 3-4 days. During harvesting, the fruit must be carefully pulled out of the ground, and then rinsed with running water.
