Time-tested tomato variety - De Barao
The De Barao tomato variety has been grown in areas of the country since the 90s. It is attractive to gardeners for its variety of subspecies, disease resistance, high productivity. In addition, this variety of tomato is well suited for any canning, fresh stored in a cool place for up to 60 days.
Description and characteristics
De Barao tomato varieties are tall - indeterminate, late-ripening, frost-resistant. The height of the bush is up to 4 meters. Ripening time - up to 120-128 days. The fruits are oblong, plum-shaped. The tomato is well suited for both greenhouses and open beds. In the latter case, the yield depends on the weather conditions. The weight of one fruit is from 90 to 120 grams.
Up to 20 kg are removed from the bush in the season. Over the years, about 7 varieties of De Barao have been bred:
- Tsarsky - a small, rich raspberry color, with a "spout", plum tomato.
- Gold - so named for its peculiar golden or bright yellow color.
- Red - classic, red, round or oblong, taste - with sourness. Disease resistant, grows well in shaded areas, fruitful. Bears fruit until late autumn.
- The black - with a specific dark color of the fruit and a green spot at the base.
- Giant - the fruits of this subspecies De Barao can reach a weight of 350 g. Very productive even under unfavorable conditions (20-22 kg per 1 bush). Resistant to many diseases of tomatoes, including late blight. Grows best in greenhouses, but is resistant to heat and cold.
- Pink - very beautiful and tasty fruits. The skin is firm, not prone to cracking. Good in salads.
- Orange - original "fiery" color and tasty fleshy fruit.
The leaves of the plant are narrow, dark green, tomato type. A frost-resistant variety, not picky about care, but gratefully responds to it with a high yield. Shade tolerates well. Some subspecies throw out a lot of greenery that needs to be thinned out. Experienced gardeners recommend planting no more than 2-3 bushes per 1 m2.
Sprouting seedlings and feeding
For De Barao, the seedling method is preferable. Sowing times depend on how the plants are planned to be grown on the site: in a greenhouse or under the sky. In the first case, seeds are planted in mid-February, in the second, in mid-March or from the end of the month.
The pre-planting material is immersed in salt water. The floating seeds are removed: they are empty. The rest are disinfected by soaking in a pink solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes.
Operating procedure:
- After all procedures, the seeds are washed with running water, dried and planted in containers with light, fertile soil.
- Sprinkle on top with the same soil, with a layer of up to 1 cm.
- Spray with warm, settled water from a spray bottle, cover with a lid, film or glass.
- They are put in a warm place. After emergence, the lid is removed.
- Seedlings are moistened once a week so that the root system does not rot. For the same purpose, holes are provided in the bottom of the container or container.
- After the appearance of two, not cotyledonous, but real leaves, seedlings need to dive, seating one plant in cups with a capacity of at least 500 ml, as the plants are tall.
Care features
On average, after 60 days (in April), the ready-made De Barao seedlings are transferred to the greenhouse, and to the open ground - at the end of May-early June, depending on climatic conditions and weather. First nitrogen root top dressing spend 10 days after planting. The soil should be moist so that the fertilizer does not damage or burn the root system.
Immediately before flowering, a liquid phosphorus-potassium fertilizer is applied. There is no need to overfeed tomatoes. Water the bushes of De Barao once a week, it is desirable that the water is warm. The next day, the soil is loosened and mulched to retain moisture and allow air to reach the roots.
It is equally important to pinch the bushes in a timely manner, leaving two shoots on the trunk. So they will give the maximum yield and will not break under the weight of the fruit. In addition, during the growth of the stem, it is constantly tied up. De Barao bushes can reach 3-4 meters in height. Supports or trellises are installed immediately after planting the seedlings. This is done because after the growth of the root system, it is easy to damage it during the deepening of the structure.
Advice
In a greenhouse, it is better to form a tomato bush on a trellis, tying the stem to it as it grows. This measure will not allow the stem to break under the weight of the fruit brushes.
As they ripen, the fruits are removed, sorted, stored or processed - canned, dried. They make delicious salads. Due to the large amount of pulp in De Barao tomatoes, not only juice is obtained, but also thick tomato puree.
At the stage of milky ripeness, tomatoes can be removed and put to ripening in a warm, dark place. This usually occurs after a frost or significant cold snap at the end of the vegetable harvest season.
Reviews
According to the reviews of summer residents and gardeners, De Barao is a time-tested variety, loved by many for its versatility in use, unpretentiousness, high yield:
- I have been growing De Barao Giant and Tsarsky for several years. Once I was advised to buy seeds, I do not regret it. She has already shared her own planting material of the variety with neighbors. It is more reliable, the seeds germinate better. I hardly see any drawbacks in tomatoes. Sometimes the harvest is so great that I sell the surplus or just give it to my friends (Lyudmila, Stanitsa Veshenskaya).
- De Barao Gold took planting material from relatives. Was visiting, tasted tomatoes, liked the taste and original color. Now I grow it in the country. But a very tall bush grows, I just tie it up. The harvest is not bad if you feed on time and the weather is good, although they are tied up until the very cold (Konstantin, Moscow).
- I love the De Barao variety. I grow it in the open field, and even if there is no time for proper care and the weather is not very good, the plantings are pleasing with the harvest. I tried almost all varieties. For some, the taste is not pronounced, I like it sweeter. But there are always a lot of them, and they look beautiful in banks (Irina, Volgodonsk).
- I have been growing De Barao for the eighth year. I prefer Tsarsky and Giant, sometimes I plant Pink. The harvest is always decent - I preserve a lot. I would advise you to use only your own seeds, collected two seasons before planting. Once I bought it at a kiosk - half of the seeds simply did not sprout, and the variety was not the same (Svetlana, Kursk).
The De Barao tomato variety, which has long been familiar to summer residents and gardeners, is still in demand. Even novice growers will find it easy to cope with growing it. The most important thing for the bush is the constant, as it grows, tying the stem to a support or trellis. The plant is vigorous, so the De Barao tomato greenhouse should be tall enough. In general, De Barao tomatoes are an unpretentious and very grateful variety, pleasing with a variety of colors, taste and invariably good yields.
