Secrets of growing and caring for a bush
The berry culture of Yezhemalin rarely appears on our plots yet; many gardeners consider it a recently bred hybrid. In fact, American breeders crossed blackberries and raspberries at the end of the 19th century and received the first harvest of unusual fruits. Recently, a new culture has appeared in Russian dachas. Gardeners quickly appreciated its productivity, unpretentiousness and easy maintenance.
Benefits of a hybrid shrub
Both berries are distinguished by excellent taste, but planting and growing each of these types is fraught with many difficulties. Raspberries are not afraid of frost, grows well in the northern regions, but they are very picky about the soil. Blackberries have no special requirements for soils, caring for her simpler, but it is a thermophilic culture. Another drawback is known to everyone who grew this crop in the country or collected in the wild. Its stems are covered with a huge number of sharp thorns that hurt the skin, cling to clothing and hair.
There are several varieties of hybrid, each with its own pros and cons. Shrubs vary in size, yield, fruit taste, number of thorns. The most popular types are:
- Tiberi;
- Texas;
- Loganberry;
- Darrow.
To understand what the yogurt is, you can consider the Tibury variety, bred half a century ago in Scotland. The bush grows up to a height of 2.5 m, the thorns are small. The main advantages of this variety are yield and resistance to disease and insect damage. Berries begin to ripen from July, fruiting occurs before frost. The fruits are large, can reach a length of 6 cm, and are very tasty.
Reproduction of ezhemalina
Since ezhemalina has not yet become widespread, gardeners immediately have a problem: where to get planting material? Many people immediately start looking for offers on the Internet. Such trade is gaining popularity every day, but when buying plants, you need to consider some subtleties. Do not order goods from a company located many thousands of kilometers away from you in other climatic conditions. The shorter the path the seedlings make, the better they will survive and grow faster. As with any purchase, it is advisable to give preference to well-known, well-established companies, rather than ephemeral ones that will send out shoots of wild rose throughout the country and immediately close their website.
Postal delivery is not a very convenient way to get planting material. This option is suitable for those in whose area they do not yet know about the new shrub; ezhemalina is not grown either in summer cottages or in nurseries. Residents of the central regions are better off using other methods:
- purchase in specialized centers;
- cut cuttings from friends or neighbors;
- propagate the bush by layering.
To obtain seedlings from shoots in August, you need to dig a young strong twig into a trench 25 cm deep. The next summer, it will take root and sprout. Planting in a permanent place begins when the seedlings reach a height of 15 cm. Cuttings can be cut in early summer. Take young shoots with 1 bud, stick them in pots with nutrient soil and place in a warm place. All care of the seedlings consists in regular watering so that the soil does not dry out. After about a month, the branches will release roots, and they can be transplanted to a permanent place.
How to plant a shrub correctly
First of all, you need to decide on what scheme the planting will be carried out: single bushes or rows.Growing according to the first option requires individual support for each plant, in the second case, shoots can be launched along the trellises. Choose a sunny, ventilated place for bushes where groundwater does not occur too close to the ground. In damp areas, drain well.
Planting begins in spring when the snow has melted and the ground has thawed. For small seedlings, you can dig holes with a diameter and depth of 40 cm. If the ezhemalina is already large, navigate by the root system - it should fit freely into the dug hole. The distance between the plants should be at least a meter, and between the rows - 2 m.Place pebbles for drainage and organic fertilizer on the bottom. For backfill, mix the soil with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. If growing on acidic soil, add ash or dolomite flour.
Water the seedlings and cut off the shoots so that their length does not exceed 30 cm. To make caring for the bushes easier, you do not have to fight with weeds, cover the ground between the bushes with cardboard. Any mulching material can be poured onto it all summer. After a year, the leaves will rot and become fertilizer.
Plant care
Growing and caring for a Taibury hybrid is easier than growing a raspberry. Watering is required only in dry summers, but do not overdo it so that the soil does not turn into a swamp. If the planting was done correctly, the nutrients should be enough for the plants for 2 years, at this time it is better not to feed them. An excess of fertilizer will cause increased growth of immature shoots, and they may not survive the harsh winter. Adult plants are fed with infusion of manure or herbs until fruit sets.
If you choose to grow on trellises, the height of the upper tier should be 2 m.At this level, you need to cut the tops of the stems so that young side shoots begin to develop. Tie them to the bottom bar so that the shoots do not block the aisles and do not make it difficult to care for the plants. With the installation of the supports, it is better not to pull, but to build them when the jemaline is planted. When the berries begin to set, cover the bushes with a fine mesh. It will shade the fruits, since the bright sun degrades their quality, and will protect the crop from the invasion of birds.
After harvesting, you need to cut off the fruit-bearing trunks, and bent the young shoots to the ground. Cover the branches with cardboard on top and add insulation: sawdust, dry grass, fallen leaves. In areas with snowy winters, you can do without an insulating material, its role will be played by a snowdrift. After the first snowfall, throw a large rampart on the bushes, and the ezhemalina will winter well.
Advice
If you grow Ezemalina in an area with severe winters with little snow, bury the young shoots in grooves in the fall. Cover the ground with a non-woven fabric, and on top sketch a thick layer of straw or leaves.
Diseases and pests ezhemalina
Ezhemalina Tiberi is resistant to most infections. The main danger for bushes is anthracnose. When using fungicides to control the disease, remember that the last treatment should take place no later than one month before harvest. Read the instructions carefully, each drug has its own characteristics of use. Do not exceed the indicated dose and concentration, you do not need chemistry-filled berries.
If you don't want to use dangerous products, protect the bushes with a decoction of nettle or horsetail. You can make your own disinfectant solution from non-toxic products. To enhance the effectiveness, it is permissible to mix several compounds and process the plantation with a mixture.
Any of the following can be diluted in 10 liters of water:
- soda ash - 50 g;
- ash - 200 g;
- colloidal sulfur - 100 g;
- fresh manure - 1 kg.
Blackberries have few pests, and some insects like to eat raspberries.One of the harmful qualities that breeders have not been able to overcome when creating a hybrid is attractiveness to parasites. Yezhemalina is attacked by:
- galitsa;
- weevil;
- raspberry beetle.
Preventive measures can include proper ungrown planting, good grooming and mulching. If insects appear, treat the plantings with insecticides. Do not forget about the defenders of the gardens - the birds, organize birdhouses and feeders for them. During the period of fruit ripening, birds spoil the harvest, it has to be protected with a net. But the rest of the time they are fighting pests.
Output
Planting and growing jemalins in the country will save you from the need to create 2 berry plantations on the site: blackberries and raspberries. One of the most popular varieties, Tiberi, has absorbed the best qualities of these crops and got rid of many of the shortcomings. The shrub is unpretentious, it does not need complex care, and the harvest is abundant and excellent taste.
Jemalina can grow in northern regions where common blackberries will not survive. To protect the shoots from freezing, lay them on the ground for the winter and insulate them. Cultivation of a new culture will not take much time, and the result will please you. From a small plantation you can make compotes, jams and preserves for the whole winter.
