Description and characteristics of the Kurazh cucumber variety, reviews and recommendations of gardeners
Courage cucumbers appeared on Russian sites in 2002, displacing most of the competitors. The hybrid can rightfully be called one of the best, as it combines high resistance to various climate changes, simple care rules and an excellent harvest in terms of volume, taste and purpose.
Description of the hybrid
Cucumbers of the Kurazh variety are an achievement of domestic selection, the Gavrish company. Agrarians recommend it for cultivation in greenhouse conditions throughout Russia. Courage is a hybrid and is marked with f1.
The plant is tall, the lash of unlimited growth is capable of reaching 3–3.5 m. The bush is medium-branched, covered with a large number of leaves. The ovaries are bundle, in each node, 2-4 cucumbers are formed on the main shoot and up to 8 on the lateral ones. The yield of the hybrid is extremely high: from 1 m2 collect up to 16-20 kg of fruit.
Courage is parthenocarpic hybrid. Its flowers are female; fruits are set without pollination. This property is optimal for greenhouse cultivation.
Fruits ripening dates - early and super early. The harvest of the summer-autumn period is harvested on the 38-44 day. The variety is grown in two turns, but with winter-spring sowing, you will have to wait 50 days before harvesting.
Characteristics of fruits: length - 12-18 cm, diameter - 3.5-4.5 cm, weight - up to 120 g. Skin is dark green, lumpy, with white thorns, there is a slight waxy coating. Light longitudinal stripes up to a third of the entire fruit are visible on the cucumber. The pulp is sweetish, juicy and crunchy. The purpose of cucumbers is mainly salad, they are also used in pickling and canning.
Advantages of the variety
Benefits of Courage cucumbers:
- the plant is not susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew, root rot, cucumber mosaic, cladosporium;
- the variety recommended for greenhouse cultivation also tolerates well the conditions of open ground;
- the crop can be harvested throughout the year when grown in heated glass greenhouses or on a windowsill;
- early maturity;
- parthenocarpicity - no worries about pollination;
- high and stable yield;
- the variety does not require intricate care, it is recommended for growing by beginners in gardening;
- fruits, after plucking from the bush, retain freshness for up to 10 days, are perfectly transported and stored;
- cucumbers stay fresh for a long time in the refrigerator;
- the taste is always without bitterness, the flesh is crispy;
- The variety is suitable for summer cuts, and for winter preparations it turns out appetizing both in assorted and alone.
The downsides of the hybrid are difficult to identify. Usually gardeners are confused by the cost of seeds. Care requirements are standard for greenhouse parthenocarpics, some of the subtleties should be taken into account when growing outdoors. The characteristic taste with a sweet note favorably distinguishes the Kurazh variety, but many bee-pollinated varieties of vegetables can compete with it.
Planting recommendations
Seeds of the Kurazh variety can be grown both by the seedling method and immediately on the garden bed. The first method is preferable, it allows you to get an earlier harvest, especially in cold regions with short daylight hours.
How seedlings are grown:
- Seeds are placed in wide boxes - they will be grown without picking.
- The soil is laid for seedlings for vegetables.
- After placing the seeds in the soil, the boxes are stored in good lighting. For germination, you need warmth - not lower than +27 degrees.
- When shoots appear, the temperature is slightly reduced - to +18 degrees.
- Young cucumbers are kept constantly hydrated.
- Transplantation to the site is planned in a month, when each sprout will have three true leaves and at least five strong roots.
Terms and rules for planting seedlings on the site:
- In order for outdoor cultivation to be successful, you need to wait until the risk of return frost drops to zero, and the temperature settles at +15 degrees. In the southern regions, the shoots are usually moved to an open area at the end of May. In the middle lane and in Siberia, it is better to grow Courage cucumbers under a film or in a greenhouse - planting in a greenhouse is carried out already in mid-April.
- The growing soil should not be acidic. Courage cucumbers prefer neutral soils. In autumn, the beds are improved by introducing organic matter: 30 kg per 1 m2, - as well as nitrophoska in the amount of 70 g and wood ash - 250 g.
- In the spring, a week before planting, the soil must be thoroughly loosened.
- So that the plants in the greenhouse do not interfere with each other, by 1 m2 place 2-2.5 bushes.
- A little manure is added to each hole. The seats are moistened.
- The seedlings are poured into holes along with a lump of earth on the roots.
- After moving, the sprouts are covered with earth, pressed down and watered.
- It does not hurt to tie the stem to the support immediately after planting.
Care rules for a great harvest
The agricultural technology of the Courage hybrid is quite simple: it is watering, lighting, fertilization, and bush formation.
Cucumbers are a moisture-loving crop, and the Courage hybrid is no exception. Watering is carried out daily or every other day. It is better not to allow the soil to dry out, the lack of moisture leads to bitterness in the fruits. An important rule: the water for irrigation should be warm, about 20-25 degrees, cucumbers get sick from cold. Moisture is applied under the bush in the morning or evening.
Advice! To stimulate the formation of ovaries and fruits, it is recommended to immediately remove ripe cucumbers from the bush. The optimum length for a mature fruit is 10-12 cm.
The quality of the lighting directly affects the yield. The more sun, the more ovaries are formed. To ensure that neighboring bushes do not shade each other, they are planted at intervals of at least 30 cm. Further maintenance requires pruning to provide the leaves with sufficient light and air.
Formation rules:
- It is recommended to keep the bush in one stem. In the axils of the first 4-6 leaves, remove all stepchildren and ovaries so that the plant directs its forces to strengthen the root system.
- Further pruning is carried out according to the following scheme: when the stem stretches up to 2 m and reaches the trellis, it is tied up. At the level of the 5-7th leaf, stepchildren are removed, the ovaries are left.
- The plant is indeterminate - the lashes are not limited in growth. To form a bush of the desired height, you will have to pinch the main whip. This is done when the stem attached to the support reaches the neighboring plant.
- At the level of 2-3 leaves to the trellis, it is useful to leave some of the side branches. They are pinched to the second sheet.
- If the bush is formed correctly, but gives little yield, it is worth freeing it from a small part of the leaves. This will give the ovaries more light.
How and when to feed the hybrid? Courage responds well to both organic matter and mineral fertilizers. Any preparations for cucumbers are taken from the complexes. The number of dressings is on average 4 during the period of active growth:
- The first feeding - 5-7 days after the transplant. Mix for irrigation: for 10 liters of water - 15 g of potassium fertilizer, 20 g of double superphosphate, 10 g of urea.
- The second feeding occurs at the time of flowering. A good step is to water the bushes with mullein infusion, adding a little ash to it.
- During the period of fruiting, there is the third and subsequent feeding. Fertilizer concentrate: 1 liter of chicken manure infusion, 1 glass of ash, 15 g of urea. Everything is diluted in 15 liters of water and brought under the bush.
Advice! After applying the fertilizer, water the plants abundantly with clean water.
Diseases of the variety and their treatment
Despite the resistance of cucumbers Kurazh to fungal cucumber diseases, some of them can hit plantings if the standard care rules are not followed:
- White rot - white terry bloom. It is treated by removing the affected parts and spraying with a solution of copper sulfate.
- Fusarium is a dangerous disease that leads to wilting of the entire bush. It is very difficult to cure cucumbers, therefore it is better to carry out preventive watering with a solution of potassium permanganate before planting.
- Anthracnose appears as light spots on the leaf blades. First, all the affected parts are cut off, then the bush is sprayed with a solution of potassium permanganate.
