Features of planting perennial morning glory and secrets of care

Content

On a hot summer day, it is nice to relax in a shaded gazebo. Planting a perennial morning glory will help you save building material and create a green, cool tent out of almost nothing. Have you bought an old cottage, and unsightly peeling walls spoil your mood? The bindweed will cover gray boards, old sheds, and a dilapidated fence. If you want to create a secluded corner - climbing plants form a living screen, covered with bright gramophones of flowers. Build a frame made of strong wire, fix it well in the ground, the bindweed will do the rest of the "construction work" itself, you only need to take proper care of the plant.

Ipomoea Batat

Features of growing perennial morning glory

The most common morning glory in summer cottages, Batat, has been growing in its homeland for many years. This tropical plant cannot survive freezing winters, so usually a new planting of a flower occurs every year. If you want your perennial to grow, there are some tricks you can try. There are recommendations to grow a flower in a large container, and in the fall, cut off the shoots and take it to a warm room for the winter. You can try, but just imagine what root system will develop in several years and how much the vessel should be. To move such a load twice a year, you will have to hire a team of movers. If you think that such work is within your power, remember that the plant is poisonous, it is undesirable to keep it in living quarters.

In the southern regions where the soil does not freeze, you can try to keep the morning glory sweet potato in the open field. Weak roots will not survive the winter, so in summer the plant needs good care so that it becomes very strong by the cold. The upper part will still have to be cut off, since it will die in the cold, and it is no longer possible to remove the intertwined shoots from the supports at the end of summer. Cover the remnants of the trunks sticking out of the ground with a thick layer of dry leaves, put a film on top to protect it from moisture. There is no guarantee that the plant will survive, but you can risk it. If the experiment fails, there is only one way out - planting new plants.

You can grow morning glory sweet potato in a winter garden or in a greenhouse, but what's the point? Vines are good for open spaces, creating screens and gazebos, and decorating hedges. Planting a couple of climbing bushes will help decorate the premises, and large thickets will prevent the passage of light to the rest of the plantings, complicate their care. If you want to grow bindweed indoors, cut off long lashes in the fall. In the spring, new shoots will grow on the remaining trunks, which will quickly reach a length of up to 7 meters.

Advice

Residents of cottages, which are supplied with water heating, can plant Ipomoea Batat above the heating main. Of course, such a landing is not welcomed by utilities, but they are unlikely to go to every house with a check. Please note that when replacing pipes, all landings will have to be uprooted, only utilities usually do not bother themselves with repair work and do them only if absolutely necessary. If the pipes do not go very deep, the soil above them does not freeze, in the fall you will need to cut off the aerial part of the plant, and insulate the ground with leaves.

Ipomoea seedlings

Seedling preparation

In early April, you need to start sowing seeds of morning glory sweet potato for seedlings. Keep them in a damp cloth for 24 hours and watch the grains swell. Do not throw away the remaining dry seeds: they are alive, but the dense shell interferes with the passage of moisture. Puncture a small hole in the peel with a needle and keep it in a damp place for another day.Most of the "naughty" seeds will swell and begin to develop.

Plant each seed in a separate container so as not to untangle or injure the roots during transplanting, lightly sprinkle with soil on top. Cover with plastic wrap and keep at + 18 until germination. The container should be large enough to provide enough room for the bindweed to develop before moving to open ground. The seeds germinate within 10 days. Keep the seedlings in the light, protect from too bright sun, do not let the soil dry out - that's the whole care of the seedlings.

When sprouts appear, place a long splinter near each of them and make sure that the bushes do not cling to someone else's support and do not intertwine with each other. Not only is it very difficult to care for tangled whips, even during transplantation you will not be able to neatly separate the plants, you will break the shoots. If the cup size is poorly chosen and it is small, do not wait for the roots to reach the bottom and go through the drainage holes. Carefully remove the plant with a clod of earth from the container and, without breaking the integrity of the clod of earth, plant it in a larger container.

If caring for seedlings seems tiresome to you, sow the swollen seeds directly into the open ground in May. At the same time, you will not wait for flowers in June, but closer to autumn. When the earth warms up, put 2-3 grains in each hole, sprinkle with earth and cover with glass or transparent film. In the northern regions, with such a sowing of morning glory, Batat may not have time to bloom, but tall green lashes will become an excellent background for a flower garden.

Morning glory in the open field

Planting morning glory in open ground

Perennial morning glory does not like strong winds and drafts. Under rapid air currents, a tall vine can break away from a support, lose leaves and flowers, and even break apart. All care will be in vain: the beauty of the curly shoots will be lost. Ipomoea will not like the bright sun either, she will close her petals and will not be so beautiful. The best option is sun in the morning and evening, and partial shade in the middle of the day. The bindweed needs good nutrition: over the summer, it should grow to great length and release many large flowers. When digging, especially if the soil is barren, add compost, manure or compound fertilizers. Add lime to acidic soil, morning glory Sweet potato loves this mineral very much. In wet areas, the vine will not develop, make good drainage.

When preparing the site, immediately install the supports along which the vine will curl. Morning glory grows very quickly and knows how to find any object that you can grab onto. If you do not direct it in the right direction, after a week you will have to unravel the shoots that have grasped the nearby plants, the rake left in the flower garden and the decorative fence. When there are no tall objects on the flower bed, the lashes cover the entire earth with a solid carpet, making it difficult for other decorative crops to grow and care for them.

The following items can be used as support:

  • special trellises;
  • tree trunks;
  • obliquely stretched twine or wire;
  • poles and poles;
  • wire frames in the form of various decorative figures: animals, birds, ancient castles.

At the end of May, make spacious holes 20 cm apart. Morning glory does not tolerate root damage, it is better to plant it with a clod of earth. Apply organic or complex fertilizers to the bottom of each hole, and use black soil or other fertile soil for backfilling. When planting is complete, water the soil well, make sure the roots are not exposed, and mulch the soil. After such a procedure, the flower garden will need minimal care.

Advice

To make the morning glory better tolerate the transplant, grow seedlings in peat potsthat can be completely buried in the ground.

Blooming morning glory

Climbing plant care

Morning glory Sweet potato is very afraid of drought, with a lack of moisture in the soil, its leaves wither in less than a day. During the hot period, the plant sometimes has to be watered daily.What should summer residents do who can visit their site only on weekends? Experienced growers have long found a way to keep the soil moist without their presence. There are 3 ways to help you.

  1. Drip irrigation system.
  2. Hydrogel applied to soil.
  3. Mulching with fallen leaves.

Liana needs different nutrients during each growing season. When planting, you need to fertilize the soil with organic matter or preparations containing a large percentage of nitrogen, which is necessary for the active growth and development of green mass. When the buds begin to set, the plant needs phosphorus and potassium, the number and size of flowers depends on their presence.

Advice

For morning glory to bloom longer, immediately remove wilted flowers. This stimulates the development of new buds.

No matter how hard you try to provide the plants with good care, pests can still attack the bindweed.

  • Aphids suck the juices from the leaves, after which yellow spots appear on them.
  • A spider mite wraps around parts of the bush with a thin cobweb and leaves dots on the leaves.

If you notice these signs, treat the plantings with an insecticide. You can get rid of the tick without chemicals, sometimes rinsing with plain water is enough.

Output

Morning glory Sweet potato is grown in Russia as an annual plant, and only in the warmest regions can you try to keep it in the same place for several years. Liana does not tolerate transplanting - if you want to transfer it indoors for the winter, dig up the roots with a large lump of soil. When growing in greenhouses and conservatories in the fall, cut off too long shoots.

The main care for the perennial morning glory Batat is timely watering, the soil should not dry out. Mulching the top layer of soil will prevent weeds from breaking through and keep the soil loose. An annual plant does not need pruning, but if you use the shoots to create different shapes on the frame, the protruding shoots need to be trimmed constantly. There is nothing wrong with planting creepers every year. Climbing plants give a huge scope for imagination, every summer there may be a new design on your site.
