What to plant in the country along the fence to protect from prying eyes?
Choosing what to plant along the fence in the country, you should take into account not only your wishes, but also the requirements of plants for growing conditions. Shrubs should not only protect the area from prying eyes, noise and dust, but also decorate the site. And so that caring for the hedge is not burdensome, the place must be suitable for the selected plants.
What should be considered when planting plants?
In order not to be disappointed in your choice and to get a good result, many factors must be considered when planting plants:
- requirements for growing conditions (illumination of the area near the fence, depth of groundwater, flooding of the site in the country during floods and rains, soil composition);
- how often do plants need care (watering, pruning, shelter for the winter) and is it possible to carry it out;
- Do the plants fit into the general style of the site or the selected bushes will look ridiculous;
- what plants are already near the fence, will they be harmoniously combined with new ones;
- how long the plant looks attractive - most of the year, or only a few months.
It is not recommended to plant tall shrubs and trees near the fence, which will cast a thick shadow for most of the day. Plants that need shelter for the winter are not suitable for hedges. It is undesirable to plant vines - their roots destroy the base of the fence, and the hedge may not withstand the weight. Plants are very difficult to care for, which grow violently without constant pruning (hop, girlish grapes other).
Important!
If shrubs with edible fruits are planted along the fence, behind which the road passes, then these fruits should not be eaten.
Description of the most unpretentious shrubs
It is best to plant decorative leafy or flowering plants along the fence that are weather-resistant and undemanding to care for. Such a hedge will be effective for most of the year, and it will not be difficult to maintain it.
Lilac is a sun-loving shrub. It is hardy, but does not tolerate strong winds. It is good if there is a fence or a house on the leeward side. On wet soils, the roots rot, you need to take care of drainage. To create continuous plantings along the fence, lilac bushes are planted at a distance of 1 meter from each other. Pruning can be done to limit growth, but this should be done immediately after flowering. Excess root growth must be removed in a timely manner.
Hawthorn is photophilous, only varieties with a dark color of leaves can grow in the shade, but with a lack of sun, fruiting will still be poor. The soil must be drained, in places where rain and melt water accumulate, the hawthorn will die. Acidic soil must be limed. The shrub is resistant to drought, takes out gassed air - this allows it to be grown along the fence, behind which there is a road. Trimming you can restrict growth and give any shape.
- Common barberry
Common barberry is an unpretentious shrub that tolerates both hot dry summers and winters with severe frosts. Does not like the close occurrence of groundwater and excessive watering. When grown in bright sun, by autumn it is already strewn with red berries. Feels good in the shade, but barely bears fruit. It grows well with high gas content. Sanitary and anti-aging pruning is required periodically.
- Barberry Thunberg
The decorativeness of the Thunberg barberry is due to the beautiful color of the foliage.Tall varieties with large green leaves are winter-hardy. Low-growing ones with bright or variegated foliage can freeze out in a harsh winter. Dry summers are well tolerated by all species. A sunny place is preferable, in the shade the decorative color of the foliage disappears, the greenery becomes faded and monotonous.
- Elder
Elderberry is a hardy shrub. It grows both in the sun and in partial shade. Polluted air does not interfere with its growth and development, and it endures severe winters without problems. The only thing that elderberry does not like is prolonged stagnation of water near the roots. Pruning is required sanitary, before bud break. Black elderberry responds well to annual pruning of 1/3 of young shoots - the plantings become denser. You should know that raw berries are inedible, and in some species they are completely poisonous.
- Rosehip
Rosehip is frost-resistant, grows on all types of soil. In dry summers, periodic watering is required. It grows well only in sunny areas, protection from strong winds is necessary.
- Park roses
Park roses, unlike other species, are winter-hardy and do not require shelter. This makes it easier to care for them and makes it possible to plant along the fence, but preferably from the sunny side. In insufficient light, park roses bloom more poorly. Watering in dry summer is necessary, it should be infrequent, but abundant.
- Derain
Derain is beautiful at any time of the year. In summer, the main decoration is variegated foliage, which by autumn changes color to burgundy, red, orange or green. In winter, the plant is eye-catching due to its bark color. It turns red, yellow or orange depending on the variety. Derain is frost-resistant, grows well both in full sun and in partial shade. It tolerates drought, but it will thank you for watering by increasing the elasticity of the foliage. If necessary, the bushes can be shaped by pruning.
- Spirea
Spirea is represented by a large number of species and varieties, which differ in height, bush shape, leaf color. Moreover, they are all beautifully flowering, but the flowering is short. You can increase the flowering period by watering the shrub in dry weather. Spirea is winter-hardy, grows both in partial shade and in full sun. Sanitary pruning is carried out only if necessary, and anti-aging pruning is done every 6-7 years.
- Chubushnik
Chubushnik, or garden jasmine, Is a flowering plant. Its varieties differ in different flowering periods. If you plant several species of this plant along one fence, then flowering will last for several months - the flowers on one bush will bloom just after the petals on the other fall. Chubushnik is unpretentious, but it blooms better in a well-lit place. In hot dry summers, abundant watering is necessary.
- Hydrangea
Hydrangea - this is a godsend for those who need to plant greenery in a shady area along the fence. Only in the shade can the hydrangea show itself in all its glory. Its small white flowers are collected in huge inflorescences that do not crumble, and in autumn they become translucent, with a greenish or yellowish tint. The soil should be constantly moist, watered as it dries. In hot weather, daily watering may be required. It hibernates without shelter, the tips of the branches may freeze slightly, but they are quickly replaced by new shoots. This does not affect flowering.
- Bubble
The vesicle is unpretentious. It grows well on any garden soil, blooms in full sun and partial shade. Water near the roots should not stagnate. Bubbles are drought-resistant, cold-resistant. If, after prolonged frosts, the shoots are frozen, they recover quickly, while the bush becomes even lush and thicker. In hot summer, it is advisable to water.
- Snowberry
The snowberry looks unusual from autumn to spring. Its branches are strewn with white berries the size of currants. Grows well only in a shady area, bright light oppresses it.Regular watering is necessary only for young plants; adult bushes are watered in severe drought, but infrequently. Gives root shoots, this leads to the fact that the plantings become dense after a few years. On sloping ground this is an advantage because the plants do not allow the soil to fall off. In other cases, the shoots should be cut out in time.
Outcome
In addition to choosing the right plants for growing along the fence, you must adhere to the rules for planting them. It is important to take into account that many plants grow in breadth and, with high thickening, lose their decorative effect. When planting, it is necessary to leave a distance of 1-1.5 meters between the bushes and the fence. In winter, when removing snow, do not throw it onto a hedge. In many plants, branches can break from weight.
