Rules for planting thyroid darmers and caring for a plant in the garden
In recent years, more and more often on personal plots, you can see thyroid darmer - a spectacular, but not too demanding plant to care for, planting which usually does not cause any particular difficulties. What conditions should a Russian summer resident provide for a guest from another continent?
Description of the plant
Darmera has two names, the second is peltiphyllum. In nature, it grows in two states of America: Oregon and California. Selects well-moist, slightly acidic soils. Darmeru can be easily found along the banks of water bodies, she prefers high humidity. Adjacent to other plants, often grows in the shade of trees.
Darmera has large rounded leaves up to half a meter in diameter. In the spring, the first arrow of the peduncle appears, about 50 cm long, blooms in a light pink color for 12-15 days. In autumn, during the destruction of chlorophyll, the leaves turn red-yellow.
Planting and breeding
Darmere is planted in open ground in spring. When planting, choose a location in an area with good drainage (stagnant fluid will lead to root rot). Additionally, you need to loosen the topsoil to avoid water accumulation. Darmera is very sensitive to lack of moisture and low air humidity, so the ideal landing site is the banks of rivers and lakes. In the garden, you need to think about how to humidify the air around the plant.
Advice
You should not plant the plant where there are severe frosts.
There are two popular breeding methods.
- The long and difficult way is by seeds. They are kept in a humid environment for 2-3 months, planted in a substrate. The first shoots appear only after 7-14 days. Sprouts develop slowly, require a lot of moisture and diffused lighting. When the first leaves appear, a pick is made. Plants are seated in a separate bowl, fertilized with complex fertilizer. It will take another 2-3 years before the darmer bloom.
- The second way is to divide the root. It allows you to get a flowering plant the next year. In the spring, a Darmer, at least 4 years old, is dug up. The roots are cleared of earth and divided into parts. The cut fragments are left to dry, treated with fungicide or Kornevin. They are planted in prepared fertilized soil.
Protect the darmer from direct sunlight in the first year of growth. Plant the plant in partial shade, thereby protecting young leaves from burns.
Growing conditions and care
Peltifillum is considered an unpretentious plant - it actively grows regardless of the amount of sunlight, even in the shade. To maintain the appearance, old dry leaves and flower stalks are cut off. Rates need to be thinned periodically.
Advice
Darmera takes up a lot due to the size of its leaves. When planting, you need to take this factor into account and leave it 1-2 m of space.
Care is generally straightforward. The basic rule that will allow you to grow a healthy plant concerns watering. Without enough moisture, the darmer will grow slowly.
This culture grows well both in a lit area and in a shaded area. In its natural environment, it often grows among large trees, remaining in their shade. The main need for light is observed during the period of active growth in spring, and in the summer period the crown of the trees will protect the Darmera from active sunlight.
Watering the Darmer should be done frequently, especially during the growing period, at least 2 times a week. Large leaves evaporate a lot of moisture, so in the summer it is watered every other day.
Soil and fertilizers
You should pay attention to the soil, it should be neutral or slightly acidic. Gardeners recommend fertilizing the soil before planting peltiphyllum.
- Organic fertilizers are applied no more than 2 times a month.
- Mineral fertilizers are used only at the beginning of the season, for example, in March or April.
If you need to fertilize most of the territory, use organic fertilizers: humus or bird droppings. The last time the plant is fertilized is before hibernation in the fall.
Darmer wintering
Darmer is from America, so it is not frost-resistant - until the first frost, it must be covered with soil covering materials or sawdust. After correct wintering, the peltiphyllum will actively grow and pick up buds in the spring.
Diseases
Darmera has a good immune system. Diseases at the initial stage are easily stopped, however, a neglected infection will destroy not only one specimen, but also an entire flower bed.
Let's take a look at the 4 most common diseases.
- Fusarium. Flowers growing on clay soils are susceptible to this disease. The most dangerous period is a set of buds and flowering. The only way to keep your flower bed safe is through prophylaxis. For example, periodically water with a solution of potassium permanganate 0.5%. In case of wilting of stems and leaves, the plant will have to be destroyed.
- Bacterial rot. It appears on the roots in the form of watery formations with a peculiar odor. The danger of the disease lies in the long-term vitality of bacteria - they are in the soil for 3-4 years. Treat contaminated soil with formalin and track plant growth and development in the area.
- Heart-shaped rot. It manifests itself in the spring, when the first shoots appear. Leaves unfold deformed, wither quickly. The infection lives in the soil for a long time. If the plants had heart rot last season, the soil should be treated with fungicides in the spring.
- Septoria. Rusty spots appear on the affected plants. With severe damage, the leaves fall off. The fungus attacks the plant during the flowering period. The diseased plant must be isolated, all diseased leaves must be cut off to healthy tissue. Treat with copper fungicide.
To scare away pests, you can use folk remedies.
Use in landscape design
Darmera has recently appeared in the arsenal of landscape designers, but its popularity is increasing every year. Not only leaves are appreciated, but also the flowers of the peltiphyllum. Thanks to its love of moisture, this plant is perfect for planting around artificial ponds and alpine slides. At the same time, Darmera goes well and gets along with other plants.
Darmera, due to its impressive size, becomes the center of landscape composition. Its foliage pleases the eye with its beautiful color until winter, when the rest of the plants have already been removed. Perfectly adjacent to anemones, Rogers, hosts, mountain women.
Darmera is an excellent plant for a site with an artificial reservoir. The key to her health and beauty is moisture. Periodic feeding and loosening of the soil is required, soil drainage is required. Resistant to disease with proper care. It is often used in landscape design, it looks beautiful throughout the spring and summer period, and in the fall it pleases with yellow-orange, red-burgundy tints on the leaves.
