How to tie up beans in an open field?
The decision on how to tie up beans in the open field should be made taking into account the varietal characteristics of the crop and the design of the selected support. There are several ways to tie a garter, so you can easily find the best option for yourself. The use of this technique helps to facilitate the care of the crop, to maintain plant health for the entire growing season.
Pros of using a garter
Legumes are climbing species and form long strings. If you grow them without a garter, the plants will fill the entire nearest space, and their shoots will intertwine with each other. In such a situation, it is no longer necessary to talk about saving space on the site and about normal planting care.
With the help of a garter, several tasks are solved at once:
- a bed of beans looks neat, does not take up much space;
- the crop is easier to handle and harvest;
- plants are less affected by diseases and pests, better illuminated by the sun.
Not all types of beans need support. Mainly curly varieties are tied up. Bush beans are only 60 cm tall, so they don't need to be fixed. For curly and semi-curling varieties, the whips of which can grow up to 5 m in length, you can buy special supports or make a structure yourself. Growing, the plant looks very decorative, forming a picturesque green hedge.
Which supports are suitable?
The support is installed in advance on the garden bed, then in the process of growth, curly beans are tied to it. The structure can be made of various materials. Iron pipes, wooden stakes, fittings are suitable as a support.
- Stake garter
In the form of supports, with this method, wooden stakes with a height of 2-2.5 m are used.They must be buried in the soil by 50-60 cm with an interval of 1 m.After the stakes are driven in, 4 beans of beans are planted near each of them (by 2 on both sides). In the future, two of the strongest plants are left.
When the bushes grow up to 30 cm, they begin to tie up, twisting the stem around the support. If the lash outgrows the support, the top of the plant must be pinched or pointed down. This is the easiest way to tie beans, but is more suitable for long beds.
- Elongated hut
You can tie the green beans to a structure of a double row of stakes installed at an angle to each other and connected at the top by a common bridge. Nails or self-tapping screws are used as connecting elements. You can also tie the stakes around with a string.
Between the stakes in a row there should be a gap of 1 m and between the rows - 0.5 m. In appearance, the finished structure resembles a long hut. Seeds are sown from the inside of the hut, the growing stems are allowed to go along the supports.
- Support-wigwam
The method is good in that it allows you to compactly arrange the planting of beans in a small area. A high stake is driven in the center. At a distance of 70-75 cm from it, other stakes are buried in a circle into the ground with an inclination to the center. The upper parts of the supports are tied with a rope together. As a result, the garden bed will look like a wigwam.
Instead of inclined stakes, you can use strong, thick twine.
Two bean plants are planted near each support. Since the wigwam has a compact size, it can be installed on any free spot.
- Mesh trellis
To begin with, metal or wooden poles with a height of 2 m are driven into the bed. The number of supports depends on the length of the bed with beans. Then a coarse mesh is attached to the posts.You can buy it in hardware or gardening stores.
The bottom edge of the net should be 25-30 cm from the ground. Growing lashes will cling to the net. If this does not happen, the plant needs to be helped by directing the shoots to the cells.
- Horizontal trellis
This design has already become traditional and is used in the cultivation of many crops.
For the device of a horizontal trellis, pillars are dug in on the sides of the beds, which are connected together with several horizontal rows of strong wire or twine. The lower wire tier is pulled at a height of 20 cm from the ground surface.
A more durable structure will be if metal rods are used instead of wire.
- Tall planting
Sometimes, summer residents use tall plants, for example, sunflowers, as a support. They are planted a little earlier than maize. When the height of the plants reaches 15-20 cm, beans are sown parallel to them. The garden bed should be positioned so that the legumes are planted on the sunny side and the sunflowers do not shade them. This method is ideal for semi-churning beans that don't have too long strings.
Garter materials
Long lashes will not be able to hold on their own on a support with a vertical or inclined attachment method. Bean stalks are tied up with a thick twine, strips of fabric, and a soft rope. The garter material should not be rough, damaging the tissue of the shoots.
You can use the industrial version - a stapler with a garter belt or plastic clips specially designed for garter plants. The purchase will require certain costs, but such devices serve for more than one year, so they will definitely pay off. In addition, the garter in this case will require a minimum of time.
Tying beans correctly is not that difficult. By performing this procedure once, you can save yourself from problems such as culture diseases, difficulties in leaving, entangling shoots. The pods on the support get more sun and are a pleasure to collect. If desired, you can organize the garter so that the bean-braided support will become an additional decoration on the site.
