How and in what to soak beans before planting?
There are situations when beans must be soaked before planting without fail, not only in water, but also in growth stimulants, dressing agents. And sometimes gardeners sow dry seeds and get friendly shoots in the spring and a rich harvest in the fall. Let's figure out when and how to soak beans, what are the benefits.
Do I need to soak beans before planting and why?
In most cases, the beans are soaked for earlier emergence. But keep in mind that this heat-loving culture does not tolerate frost. Even low positive temperatures - up to +10 ° C - have a detrimental effect on it: leaves hang from the cold, and then turn yellow and dry out. The plant dies.
Therefore, the swollen seeds can be sown only in the ground warmed up to +15 ° C 6–10 days before the end of return frosts. It is after such a period after sowing that shoots appear. And dry beans can be sown 2 weeks before the arrival of warm days and nights without low temperatures.
They are soaked not only for accelerated germination, but also for disinfection. There are drugs that kill disease-causing fungi that live on the surface of the seeds or repel insects that are ready to nibble on your beans once they are in the ground.
Many gardeners say that their beans are not sick with anything and that pests do not touch it. However, in some regions, this crop suffers from white rot and powdery mildew in wet summers. She even has "her own" pests:
- bean weevil,
- nodule weevil,
- sprout fly,
- whitefly.
If you collected the seeds from your own beans and they were sick last year, then soaking in dressing agents before sowing is necessary.
How to Soak Bean Seeds for Fast Germination?
Before soaking the beans, sort out, discard the grains of a different color, uncharacteristic for the variety, as well as small and damaged ones.
For swelling, it is enough to hold the seeds for 2 hours in water at room temperature, you can soak them overnight, but not longer. Ripe beans are 50-60% carbohydrates, so with prolonged soaking, the liquid can ferment, and the seeds - sour. They will no longer sprout.
Sometimes soaking is combined with germination. For this, selected high-quality dry grains are wrapped in a wet cotton cloth and placed in a warm place with a temperature of about +25 ° C. In a day, the roots will begin to hatch.
Do not use cheesecloth or other loose materials for this method, which can entangle the seedlings. It will be difficult to disentangle them from the fibers, and the broken ones will not be restored - you will not get plants from such grain.
Growth stimulants for soaking bean seeds
Before planting, beans must be soaked in growth stimulants (Epine, Zircon, HB-101, etc.) if you live in a region of extreme farming. Spring is late and unpredictable here, temperatures during the day, even in late spring - early summer, often drop below + 10 ° C, and after a hot day in the evening it can get dramatically colder to frost. Sometimes it is warm, but with prolonged drizzling rains.
Beans with sudden temperature changes, poor lighting on cloudy days, high humidity do not rise for a long time, and then they develop poorly, as if they freeze in one pore, and begin to hurt. Young seedlings do not have enough strength to withstand adverse weather conditions.
What is the use of growth stimulants in this case?
- They help to cope with stressful situations such as cold weather, heat, low light.
- They strengthen the immune system, the emerging seedlings are better able to resist diseases.
- Accelerate rooting and germination.
- They fill the grain with energy that contributes to the rapid development of a young plant, which ultimately will have a positive effect on its yield.
Any beans can be soaked in stimulants:
- cowpea,
- asparagus,
- decorative.
These preparations perform the same functions for plants as vitamins do for us. The seed does not waste its own strength on germination, but draws it from the solution, which it feeds on. By soaking the beans in a stimulant, we provide the beans with extra vitality in the form of beneficial micronutrients and growth hormones.
How to pickle beans before sowing, in what to soak?
If on your site cucumbers are sick with powdery mildew, tomatoes and potatoes - late blight, strawberries are affected by gray rot, which means that the climatic conditions of your region contribute to the development of fungal diseases. And where plants weakened by diseases, pests like to settle there (by the way, they also carry fungal spores, viruses and harmful bacteria).
In this case, it is imperative to soak the beans in a disinfecting solution before planting. In shops and gardening departments, you can find seed treaters for a specific crop. In our case, these are legumes.
Types of grain dressing agents:
- fungicidal - against diseases ("Tebu", "Benefis", "Polaris");
- insecticidal - against pests ("Harita", "Imidor");
- insectofungicidal - against diseases and pests ("Tuareg").
If it is not possible to find special drugs, use the available means:
- from diseases, hold the beans for 20 minutes in a pink solution of potassium permanganate;
- to ward off pests, soak for an hour in garlic water (mix 1 part juice with 3 parts water)
- to prevent diseases and pests, immerse the seeds in a solution of boric acid powder (1 g per 5 l of water) for 3-5 minutes.
Well, if your beans are not sick with anything and their seeds are not eaten by pests before they have time to germinate, then you are very lucky. You can not soak in anything before planting. Beans in favorable conditions are a very tenacious plant. It happens that the gardener throws old grains into the compost, already eaten by a bug over the years of storage, and they all germinate and turn into healthy and productive bushes.
