Pepper Atlant: variety overview and tips for growing
To grow sweet and large peppers on your site is a desire that many gardeners are filled with. One of the most suitable modern varieties for these purposes is the Atlant Bulgarian pepper.
The scientific work of the breeders of Agrofirma Poisk LLC made it possible to obtain a new variety of sweet large-fruited pepper, which was given the name Atlant. In September 2006, the company's specialists submitted an application for consideration to the State Sort Commission. Test cultivation showed decent results and compliance with the declared characteristics, which made it possible to include the Atlant pepper variety in the Register of Approved Plants in mid-2007.
Why is the variety interesting?
Sweet pepper Atlant made a splash among the owners of personal subsidiary plots. The giant fully justifies its name - the giant fruits were appreciated not only for their large size, but also for their meatiness (wall thickness can be up to 11 mm), juiciness and versatility of use.
Today, based on the reviews of gardeners, Atlant pepper is the sweetest of all varieties and hybrids on the market.

This type of sweet pepper is more suited to the definition of "medium". A fully formed bush reaches 80 cm in height. By species definition, it is half-stem, which determines the presence of 1 to 3 lateral shoots. Accordingly, the bush will need shaping. The presence of a large number of lateral stems suggests spreading, but this variety does not have this feature.
Atlanta's leaf plates are rather large in size, with a slightly wrinkled texture. The shrub is low-leafed compared to other varieties of peppers of the same type and species.
Fruit
The popularity of the Atlant sweet pepper variety is due precisely to its fruits. Below are their main characteristics.
- Colour. During the entire growing season, the color of the fruits changes from green, which corresponds to technical maturity, to red, which determines the biological (or consumer) ripeness, which is also evidenced by the presence of glossy sheen.
- The form. This parameter is clearly defined in the description of the variety - a cuboid-elongated shape with a characteristic blunt end.
- Texture. The Atlant pepper fruits differ from many of their counterparts in thicker and fleshy walls.This criterion is very important, since the juiciness of the fruit depends on it. According to the internal structure of this variety, the presence of 3-4 chambers is predetermined.
- The size. Fruits from the first ovaries can grow up to 26 cm in length and up to 12 cm in diameter. Subsequent peppers cannot boast of such large sizes and in most cases grow up to 19 cm. At the same time, there is practically no reduction in diameter.
- Weight. As with the size, the weight of the ripe peppers differs depending on their location on the bush. The first fruits weigh up to 230 g, and all subsequent ones can only last up to 180 g.
Pros and cons of the variety
The advantages of Atlant sweet peppers include:
- large size;
- thick walls;
- sweet taste;
- juiciness;
- resistance to temperature extremes;
- resistance to most fungal diseases;
- the possibility of universal use;
- collection of our own planting material.
The main dissatisfaction of gardeners is caused by the small volume of the harvest. But this is a rather controversial issue, since large-fruited varieties are difficult to allow a large number of fruits to ripen. Therefore, this criterion speaks not so much of a deficiency as of a genetic predisposition.
Growing features
Speaking about the peculiarities of growing Atlant sweet peppers, it is worth paying more attention to the time of planting the finished seedlings in the ground and the subsequent care of the bushes.
The variety is universal not only in matters of fruit consumption, but also in matters of growth - the bushes grow and bear fruit excellently in both open and closed ground (hotbeds, greenhouses).
When growing a variety in greenhouses, planting seedlings should be carried out no later than the 3rd decade of May. In open field conditions, seedlings can be planted only when there is no threat of night frosts. In most regions, this period falls on the first ten days of June.
The Atlanta planting scheme can be different and depends only on the irrigation method:
- with drip irrigation - from 85 x 20 cm to 135 x 20 cm;
- when sprinkling - 40 x 60 cm.
A prerequisite is watering the seedlings only with warm water strictly at the root up to 4 times a week, with the obligatory soil mulching after the first watering.
This variety of pepper is able to grow and bear fruit with thickened plantings, as evidenced by numerous reviews not only of owners of personal subsidiary farms, but also of farmers. In this case, 1 m2 it is necessary to plant up to 7 bushes.
For planting pepper seedlings in open ground, you should give preference to sunny areas without drafts, and backstage plants (corn, legumes) will help protect the plantings from the wind.
Since the variety is medium-sized, it becomes necessary to provide supports. Pegs or equipped trellises with three rows of tensioned wire (the distance between the rows is no more than 20 cm) can easily help to cope with this question.
The Atlant pepper variety has increased resistance to many fungal diseases, so the issue of fungicide treatment can be postponed. But as a preventive measure, plantings can be treated with solutions of biological products, for example, "Fitosporin" or "Trichodermina".
The main pests that can damage bushes and future crops:
- in the greenhouse - aphids;
- in the open field - the Colorado potato beetle.
You can get rid of them with the help of drugs with an acaricidal spectrum of action:
- Actellik;
- Fitoverm;
- "Inta-vir".
