How to get rid of midges in seedlings using proven methods?

Content

When planting seedlings of tomatoes, peppers or cabbage, any summer resident dreams of getting a rich harvest and providing his family with vegetables and conservation for the whole winter. Unfortunately, midges in seedlings can interfere with this. In greenhouse conditions and in an apartment, small white midges are capable of breeding at any time of the year. The larvae laid in the ground undermine the roots of the seedlings and quickly lead them to death.

Why do midges start?

On the seedlings, you can see not only white, but also black midges. Despite the fact that these insects are street pests, they easily enter the house through the window and take root well in sprout pots.

The tiny black midge sciaris is dangerous for seedlings. She herself does not harm the plants, but her larvae quickly multiply in moist soil and gnaw the roots of the shoots. From this, the seedlings quickly die.

The main reason for the appearance of parasites is excessive watering, especially in the cool season. When the soil is constantly moistened and does not have time to dry out, a comfortable atmosphere is created for the development of larvae.

Often, pests are found in the soil that gardeners buy in the store. It is difficult to notice small larvae until they begin to actively spread, and this happens when the seedlings have already grown and matured enough.

There are many simple and effective ways to preserve the plant and get rid of insects for a long time.

What to do when midges appear?

It is recommended to prevent the invasion of pests with full care of the plant. Loosen the soil well. Fertilize and water the soil in a timely manner. If the midges do start, try removing them using proven methods.

Sciarid, or, as they are also called, mushroom mosquitoes, as well as other flying parasites in an apartment, are easy to poison with a fumigator. Sticky tapes for flies and gel for killing ants help well for these purposes. They need to be placed between the pots of plants, they will attract and destroy the midges.

You can help seedlings with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. If you notice small worms or black flies on the leaves of seedlings in the ground, dilute a few manganese crystals in 1 liter of water and water the plants.

It is useful to use other methods of struggle:

  • sprinkle the surface of the soil with a thick layer of ash, it prevents the spread of parasites in the soil;
  • Dig some tobacco or a couple of garlic heads into the ground. This will scare away insects for a long time;
  • a few days after watering with manganese, dilute 1 spoonful of lemon juice and the same amount of soap solution in a liter of water. An acidic environment attracts insects, and soap prevents a film from forming on the water. Therefore, when pests land on it, they instantly drown.

Advice

If there are a lot of midges, the plant can be saved with chemicals. In specialized stores it is easy to buy such products as "Fufanon", "Aktara", "Grom-2" or "Mukhoed". The main thing is to choose the right poison for the type of plant and do not deviate from the instructions.

Dichlorvos is considered an effective remedy. They need to spray the soil and leaves of the seedlings. To reduce the human exposure to the harmful vapors of "Dichlorvos", the plant is allowed to be covered for several hours with a plastic bag and taken out to the balcony.

When the larvae have filled all the seedlings, the only way out is to transplant the plants. Shake off their roots thoroughly and plant the shoots in a new pot and soil. The old land cannot be sifted and preserved.Throw it away to prevent further spread of pests.

Aphids on a tomato leaf

Eliminating black gnats on tomatoes

After planting plants in open ground, they are often attacked by pests. Tomato seedlings are especially affected by the invasion of the black midge. Insects are of two types: winged and wingless. Many summer residents call them melon aphids. Getting rid of parasites is very difficult. Adults stick to the shoots and each leaf of the tomato. They begin to drink cell juice and secrete honeydew, which spoils young leaves and is food for ants. Therefore, aphids often hide for the night in ant nests and keep their eggs there.

Migrating from bush to bush, they infect tomato sprouts and can destroy plants in a few weeks. In order to prevent the spread of pests, it is useful to carry out comprehensive prevention.

  1. Eliminate ant nests from the cottage. This will reduce the number of eggs from which new individuals quickly emerge.
  2. Weed the weeds thoroughly, because midges love to live in their shoots.
  3. Plant onions, garlic, dill between the bushes. Their strong smell scares off midges, and she tries not to settle in such a bed.

When there are few parasites, experienced summer residents collect them by hand or wash them off with a powerful jet of water from a hose. Of the chemicals, "Fufanon", "Aktafit" and "Aktara" are good help. The preparations destroy aphids not only on young tomato seedlings, but also on adult bushes. During processing, you need to carefully spray the inside of the leaves, where the bulk of the pests usually accumulate. To completely get rid of them, the drug must be diluted and used 3 times with an interval of 5-7 days strictly according to the instructions.

Spraying tomato seedlings

How to destroy black midges in folk ways?

Since during the ripening of fruits, the treatment of tomatoes and other crops with chemicals is undesirable, most summer residents prefer to destroy the midge using folk methods.

Important!

Decoctions from plants are effective, but do not forget that a high concentration of the solution can burn shoots and leaves, so do not deviate from the recipe while preparing the composition.

The following are very popular with farmers:

  • a decoction of celandine;
  • dandelion tincture;
  • mustard, red pepper and garlic;
  • vinegar solution.

A decoction of celandine quickly kills black midges. It must be made from green leaves and plant branches.

  1. Collect 400 g of raw materials, fill it with 1 liter of water and leave for a day. When the liquid is infused, put it on fire and simmer for 30 minutes on a minimum flame.
  2. Turn off, let the broth cool on its own, strain through a piece of gauze and dilute the infusion in 10 liters of water.
  3. Place the liquid in the cellar for 2 days and spray each tomato bush 2-3 times at 5-day intervals.

The black winged and wingless midge does not tolerate dandelion juice, so it can be used to make an excellent remedy for its destruction. Collect 1 kg of roots and leaves of the plant, pour 10 liters of boiling water over them, cover with a lid and leave for 24 hours, putting them closer to warmth. To improve the ability of the infusion to scare off midges, add 1 tbsp to it. l. red pepper and the same amount of grated laundry soap. Use on tomatoes and the soil around them.

Pepper, mustard, and garlic are natural pests. To prepare the product, peel 5 large cloves of garlic, grind them in a mortar and combine with 20 g of ground red pepper and 3 tbsp. l. mustard powder. Pour the components with 5 liters of water at room temperature and leave for at least 3 days. Then strain and sprinkle the solution on each plant and the ground below it.

The acidic environment provided by table vinegar is fatal to midges. But in order not to burn the delicate leaves of tomatoes, the solution must be made of a weak consistency. It will be enough 1 tbsp. l. per liter of water.

White midges and mushroom gnats in the open field

White midges, called whiteflies, drink juice from tomato leaves and lay many eggs. The affected plant develops poorly and turns yellow quickly. An adult fly easily dies from chemicals, which cannot be said about eggs, which are resistant to many poisons.

To prevent the spread of the whitefly, you cannot provide it with comfortable conditions for breeding:

  • do not plant seedlings too densely;
  • try to provide good air circulation to ventilate the plants;
  • do not allow strong planting moisture;
  • strengthen the garden with fertilizers.

If the midge still starts, try to get rid of it with tincture of tobacco. Grind a pack of Polet or Prima cigarettes, pour 1 liter of heated water and place the infusion in a dark place. After 5 days, strain and process the tomatoes once every 3 days until the insects are destroyed.

It is useful to make a soapy solution. Grate laundry soap, measure 1 tbsp. l. and stir it in 6 liters of warm water. When the soap is completely dissolved, spray the greens in the beds and the soil beneath them.

Fungus mosquitoes are easy to spot as they usually fly in flocks. From the eggs laid by them in the soil, larvae quickly appear and begin to destroy the plant. Seeing midges, immediately treat the tomato bushes with "Fufanon" or "Actellik". To get rid of the larvae parasitizing in the soil, the Bazudin agent is suitable. Remove the top layer of soil near the plants with a shovel, sprinkle the preparation granules on the soil and sprinkle them with earth. During watering, the poison will saturate the soil and destroy the larvae.

If a swarm of pests swirls over the planted plants, do not panic. Timely treatment and prevention will help get rid of insects for a long time and preserve the harvest.

Most importantly, do not expect the midges to leave the garden themselves. Even when there are few of them, insects need to be instantly destroyed, because they instantly multiply and are carriers of various diseases and fungi.
