Terms and rules for planting celery seedlings to a permanent place

Content

Celery contains a large amount of vitamins and minerals, which gives the dishes a special taste. Of course, celery seedlings growing in their own garden will be more useful than a store counterpart, so many people prefer to grow this vegetable on their own. Considering that the period of ripening of root or petiole celery in the first year is more than six months, it makes sense to grow a culture only by seedling.

Seedling celery

Growing seedlings

Celery is grown most often of two types: root or petiole. Both species are biennials. Their main difference lies in the parts that are eaten: in the first, the nodules are edible, in the second, the petioles. In addition, you can season dishes with plant foliage. You can also grow leaf celery, but this is impractical, since only leaves are edible, tubers and stems are very thin.

When the choice is made in favor of one of the species, they move on to growing seedlings, which goes through the following stages.

  1. Seed preparation.
  2. Soil preparation.
  3. Sowing seeds in the ground.
  4. Sprout care.
  5. Picking.
  6. Transplant to open ground.

The main care for root or stalk celery seedlings is maintaining soil moisture, providing light and regular ventilation.

It is necessary to plant seedlings in a permanent place according to all the rules in order to get the maximum benefit from growing this crop. Initially, you need to decide on the site on which the celery will be planted. It is also important to know when to plant and what the seedlings should be.

Celery soil

Landing place

Prepared since autumn. Celery loves loose and fertile soil that can retain moisture. The soil should be neutral - acidity can be reduced by adding lime along with the rest of the fertilizer. For fertilization in the fall, rotted compost and phosphorus fertilizers are applied, taken approximately 7 kg and 10 g, respectively, per 1m2... Digging up the earth in spring, additionally bring in 1m2 about 4 g of nitrogen, 5 g of potash and 2 g of manganese fertilizers.

Important!

The introduction of nitrogen fertilizers depends on the type of plant grown: petiole celery, in contrast to the root one, which requires a low nitrogen content, needs a large amount of this element.

Before increasing soil fertility, it is necessary to determine the planting site: it should be under the sun's rays, where there are no drafts. Can be planted in a slightly shaded area for more aromatic foliage. You should not place the garden next to the parsnip, because both of these plants affect the same pests.

Failure to comply with the conditions of lighting and fertility at the preparatory stage will negatively affect the future harvest. Before preparing the garden, it is important to take into account its size, which directly depends on the number of bushes: optimally, you can plant 15 bushes per 1 m2.

Timing

Planting celery in open ground is carried out when the average temperature is set to about + 10 ° C, when the threat of frost has passed. Of course, some varieties of culture are able to withstand low temperatures, down to -4 ° C, but only if the cold snaps are short-lived.

It is best to plant celery root in late spring, in the second half of May. Petiole can be replanted from the beginning of the month, provided that a favorable climate is established.

Celery in seedling cassettes

Seedling

Usually two- or three-month seedlings are transplanted into the ground.The sprouts are ready for transplanting to a permanent place when they have more than five true leaves and reach a height of 10 cm.When growing seedlings, it must be borne in mind that the yield from weak and overgrown plants is often of poor quality, therefore, special attention should be paid to growing celery seedlings.

When there is a week left before transplanting into the ground, the sprouts begin temperso that they take root better. Hardening consists in more frequent airing and taking seedlings to the open air, the time spent outside the house gradually increases. A couple of hours before the important moment, the plants are well shed with water.

Transplant rules

  • Planting celery is done only in clear sunny weather.
  • You need to plant sprouts in holes about 10 cm deep.
  • Before planting, the petiole celery roots are shortened by about a third; in the root species it is better not to touch them, as this can negatively affect the quality of the tuber.
  • If the weather was dry for several days before the transplantation, you need to pour a little more than a liter of water into each planting hole and carefully plant the shoots, trying not to fill the growth point.
  • Having sprinkled the holes with earth and lightly tamped them, it is necessary to shed and mulch the soil well at the roots of the plant so that the soil does not dry out.

The location parameters of the petiole and root celery bushes are different.

  • The bushes of the root plant are placed at a distance of about 35 cm from each other, leaving 45 cm between the rows.
  • Petiole bushes are planted every 15 cm in ribbon beds located at a distance of about half a meter from each other.

Root celery

Care of planted shoots

Standard celery care involves the following:

  • constant watering, depending on the weather and moisture level under the mulch;

Important!

The soil at the roots of the celery should be constantly moist, but the water should not stagnate.

  • fertilization every one and a half weeks with liquid organic dressings, for example, nettle infusion;
  • weed control - it will be quite simple, because weed in the beds with celery grows much worse than on others, because of the specific substance it secretes;
  • hilling three times a week and sprinkling with moist soil as needed (try to prevent the main green mass from sinking into the ground).

Advice

To prevent the formation of lateral roots that slow down the development of the tuber, it is not recommended to huddle root celery.

The first complex mineral dressing is done about a week and a half after planting the seedlings in open ground, 25 g of fertilizer is taken on a bucket of water. The feeding is repeated a month later.

In the last months of vegetable growth, it is necessary to provide it with abundant watering. There are also certain nuances of growing different varieties of celery.

  • When lateral roots appear in the root variety, you can dig out part of the stem in July-August, cut off the roots, and after the slices dry, pour the soil back.
  • You also need to remove some of the outer leaves as the base of the stems gets thicker.
  • In the petiole species, for bleaching, the stems are wrapped in black paper as soon as it reaches a height of about half a meter.
  • When about three weeks have passed after wrapping, it is necessary to wrap the grown petioles.

Important!

Only the petioles are wrapped in black paper, the top, which is about a third of the entire length, should remain in the sun.

Despite some care features, celery is not capricious. Planting carried out in accordance with all the rules and regular care, consisting in fertilization and optimal watering, allow you to get a good harvest, rich in useful trace elements and vitamins. Even when damaged by pests, the plant often remains healthy, which is undoubtedly a positive feature. For winter, celery is covered with foliage or straw to protect it from frost.
