Tomato variety Pink giant: characteristics and cultivation features
The Pink Giant variety is a large-sized tomato with a sweet, pink pulp, a dream of many gardeners that has become available. Tomatoes were sectioned by the company "NK LTD" from the city of Shchelkovo in 1998. In 2001, the variety was included in the State Register and approved for cultivation throughout the country after the zoning of seed material.
Description
The variety belongs to the group of pink-fruited tomatoes. A tall plant, subject to the rules of planting and care, stretches up to 2 m.Requires beds with high trellises or stands, the formation of bushes, pinching... Due to the spreading crown and height, the variety needs space: by 1 m2 it is recommended to grow no more than 3 bushes.
Features of the bush and the rules for its formation
The foliage is large, but not thickened. Variety of medium early ripening, harvesting begins 110 days after planting the seed. It is recommended to leave no more than 3 strong ovaries in the inflorescence. The shape of the vegetables is rounded, slightly flattened, pink in color, ribbing is clearly pronounced near the stalk, but it is less than that of other pink-fruited varieties.
For high yields, you need to remember the rules for the formation of bushes of tall tomatoes:
- It is not recommended to leave more than 7 brushes on a bush.
- Above 7 inflorescences, the plant must be pinched so that food flows directly to the remaining part of the stem with the forming tomatoes.
- If it is necessary to grow especially large tomatoes, only 4-5 clusters with ovaries are left. This operation is carried out during the formation of fruit brushes. And in order to increase the size of the remaining ovaries, it is recommended to leave 2-3 strongest flowers.
Correctly formed bushes with proper care allow you to collect 10-15 kg from each square. meter of the garden.
More about fruits
The characteristics and description of these vegetables are similar to the rest of the large-fruited pink tomatoes. The pulp is fleshy, sweet, with a high percentage of juice. The main difference from other varieties is a large amount of seed material in special chambers.
The average weight of tomatoes is 400-500 g, but if the requirements are met and the rules of care are followed, gardeners grow specimens in 1000-1200 g. Especially large inflorescences make it possible to obtain unique tomatoes weighing up to 2 kg, but such vegetables give an irregular shape.
Important
To collect seeds, the gardener is advised to leave the first large poured tomato and, after it ripens, collect up to 100 seeds, which will allow growing strong, productive plants next year.
By their properties, the Giant pink tomatoes are of the salad type. But it is also suitable for tasty tomato juice for the winter, which is distinguished by increased sweetness and original taste. The fruits are used to decorate various dishes and prepare vegetable salads. Because of their size, tomatoes do not go for conservation, but the main reason is the delicate skin, which deforms and crawls during heat treatment.
Advantages and disadvantages
Among the advantages, according to gardeners' reviews, there are several features of these tomatoes:
- delicate and sweet taste;
- large sizes;
- high level of nutrients and vitamins;
- unpretentious plant does not require additional care, compared to other varieties of tomatoes;
- relatively resistant to most fungal diseases;
- versatility - tomatoes are used to make fresh snacks, jams, ketchup and tomato juice;
- long shelf life and good transport performance.
Gardeners attribute several qualities to the disadvantages of the variety:
- a tall plant requires preparation and installation of trellises or the installation of high supports;
- to maintain the qualities, the plant must be formed and pinned - this takes time and effort. But the harvest of large raspberry tomatoes will be a reward for labor.
Important
It is recommended to plant tomatoes in the beds after growing carrots, cucumbers, zucchini or garden greens on them. But plants will not tolerate the neighborhood of weeds, "stealing" food from vegetables.
Growing
There are no particular differences from the process of growing other tomatoes. The gardener needs to remember only the main points:
- The Raspberry Giant variety is a thermophilic plant, therefore outdoor cultivation is possible only in the southern regions. Throughout the rest of the territory, tomatoes take root in greenhouses or greenhouses.
- The term for sowing seeds for seedlings is the end of February or the beginning of March. Moving seedlings to open ground or a greenhouse - no earlier than 50-60 days.
- Seed material is recommended to be planted directly in cups so that avoid developmental lag after a dive... A few grains are placed in a container, and then leave a strong sprout.
- You should not plant a large bed of tomatoes of this variety. If you plan to use them for salad, it is enough to plant 5-6 bushes. So the space in the greenhouse is saved and there are enough tomatoes for a large family.
- You can form a plant in 1, 2 or 3 stems. In the latter case, there will be more tomatoes, but their size will decrease. To obtain giants, 1 stem is left and the number of ovaries in the brush is reduced.
- The variety requires mandatory pinching and pinching.
All other operations for the care and preventive treatments against diseases are carried out according to the basic scheme. The plant does not like waterlogged soil. In such conditions, pathogenic fauna and flora develop. It is enough for the gardener to fill with mulch and maintain constantly moist soil under the plants.
In the first 15-20 days, the bushes require daily watering with a small amount of water. After the beginning of fruiting, you need to moisten the soil no more than 1 time in 7-8 days, but increase the volume of water. Frequent watering during this period causes late blight and cracking or decay of tomatoes.
Plants need to be fed at least 3 times during the growth period:
- first fertilization - after 8-10 days after landing... A large amount of organic matter is added to the composition, it is she who is responsible for the growth of the green mass of the bush;
- 2 and 3 fertilizer is given before flowering and after the beginning of fruiting of 1 ovary. At this time, special attention is paid to potassium and phosphorus.
As with other tomatoes, you need to carefully look at the condition of the leaves and the plant as a whole. When the color changes, foliar fertilizing is done with ready-made balanced compositions of mineral fertilizers.
Even a novice gardener can grow a decent harvest of large, sweet, pink tomatoes of the Giant Pink variety. The main thing is to follow the rules of planting, care and protection of plants from diseases and pests.
