Greenhouse tomatoes shed flowers: find out and eliminate the cause

Content

When planting any crop, the gardener expects a high yield. When the color of the tomatoes in the greenhouse falls, urgent action is needed.

Tomato flowers

The first group of reasons

Such a misfortune can have a variety of reasons, from climatic troubles to errors in planting and leaving. First of all, the color state is influenced by:

  • the quality or characteristics of the seed;
  • stress (such as a transplant);
  • thickening;
  • pollination.

Poor, weak, or infested seeds produce frail sprouts that cannot produce or hold flowers. This more often happens if you purchase planting material from unverified sellers or, having collected seeds from your site, neglect the disinfecting treatment.

They do not give flowers and ovaries, let empty flowers or shed plant buds, planted from seeds collected from hybrid varieties. In this case, nothing can be done about the problem.

A healthy, fertile plant reacts by dropping flowers for transplanting, a sharp change in night or day temperature, and other stressful situations.

Relaxed tomato flowers

When the correct distance between the tomatoes is not maintained, the tomatoes lack light and air, especially at the bottom of the bush. Barren flowers appear, some of the inflorescences fall off, the ovaries on the remaining ones appear and develop slowly.

Due to poor ventilation, a greenhouse effect is created, pests start in excessively moist soil, and a weakened plant loses flowers. Therefore, it is important from the very beginning to leave at least half a meter between plantings, and as you grow - tie up, pinch and form a bush.

Flowers from tomato clusters will fall off if not pollinated. To prevent this:

  • in good weather, the greenhouse is left open, inviting insects;
  • if this is not enough, sweet-smelling baits are laid around the bushes;
  • in cool weather, so as not to get cold planting, tomatoes pollinate manually. For this, the flowering brushes are shaken over the brushes of a neighboring or the same bush. If the plant is short, then just gently shake the branch with flowers. A third method for hand pollination is to shake the entire bush by tapping on the fence supporting the stems. The most time consuming method is to transfer pollen from flower to flower with a brush.

The second group of reasons

Flowers fall off if improper care is followed. This includes the following factors:

  • temperature regime;
  • moisture and illness;
  • number of dressings;
  • disease.

Tomatoes do not like low and high temperatures: in the cold they develop slowly, and at temperatures above 32 ° C, pollen coagulates in many varieties of tomatoes, the plants shed flowers and ovaries from the heat. Tomato bushes also react negatively to temperature changes.

Another likely reason for the falling color - lack of moisture. In this case, additional symptoms are sluggish and curling leaves, cracked earth under the bush.

Flowers are showered because of dampness. Overflow and stagnation of moisture in itself harms the bushes, blocking the access of air, however, in such conditions, harmful microorganisms, including fungi, also easily multiply. As a result, the roots, stems, leaves begin to rot. To protect plantings, watering is done rarely, the ground is mulched, and the greenhouse is ventilated daily: the windows are left open until the moisture that has settled on the glass completely evaporates.

Flowers fall from the bush when the plant is completely affected by one or another ailment. If the infection is treatable, the tomatoes are sprayed and / or watered under the root with solutions of fungicides or other drugs. If it is impossible to save the plant, the bushes are removed from the garden and burned.

Young tomatoes

Advice
In the greenhouse, it is recommended to shake the tomato stems daily, in the morning, to remove condensation drops. Pathogenic microorganisms appear in them, and not on the leaves of tomatoes.

Tomatoes won't flower or shed their buds if the soil contains too much nitrogen. Getting an excess of this substance, the plant is fattening, as gardeners say, builds up green mass and is not going to bear fruit. Therefore, it is necessary to apply mineral fertilizers with nitrogen, substance-rich manure or ammonia solution during the growing season. During flowering, tomatoes need more potassium and phosphorus.

Poor soil affects flowering badly. Deficiency of any nutrient weakens the plants, they lose their strength and shed their color, then the leaves.

Additional recommendations

Heating and the use of a covering material when the temperature drops, morning ventilation, but not quite early, but with already warmed air, helps to maintain comfortable conditions for tomatoes in the greenhouse.

Growing tomatoes in a greenhouse

The measures are aimed at maintaining a uniform, without jumps, temperature in the greenhouse. Plants are saved from the heat by covering the walls with spunbond or painting over with chalk, opening doors and vents, watering, but not the bushes themselves, but the soil between them, paths.

The reason for the fall of flowers from tomato bushes can be profuse flowering. When a plant lacks nutrients, it sheds "extra" inflorescences. Complex feeding normalizes the situation.

Advice
For the prevention of falling flowers and an abundance of ovaries, spraying with a fruit-forming stimulator "Bud" is used.

You should regularly inspect the beds - then you can notice in time that the bushes are dropping buds. At an early stage, it is enough to eliminate the cause of the ailment (feed or change the course of fertilizers, adjust the humidity or temperature, etc.) in order to save the flowering and future harvest. In the case of a fungus or other infections, complete defeat should not be allowed - treatment should be started at the first sign, without waiting for the plant to throw off the flowers. Mindfulness and accuracy are all you need to enjoy a rich and tasty tomato harvest.
