How to recognize Königsberg tomatoes

The Kenisberg tomato is not a hybrid. It is an independent variety that combines the best qualities of crossed plants.

  • The variety is indeterminate, that is, it has no growth restrictions. The bush stretches more than 2 m in height. It is customary to form the plant into two stems, on which many brushes with 5-6 ovaries are formed. The leaves are large, rich green, slightly pubescent, reminiscent of potato tops. Inflorescences, the first of which is located after the twelfth leaf, are formed every three leaves.
  • From planting seeds to harvesting, at least 115 days pass, the variety belongs to the mid-season. Konigsberg was bred as a greenhouse variety, however, with proper care, the plants do well in open beds.
  • Tomatoes are large, slightly elongated, red, yellow or pink, depending on the variety. The mass of one fruit can reach 850 g, but on average does not exceed 300 g. The pulp is dense, fleshy, sweet, the skin is rather tough, glossy, does not crack. This makes it easier to store and transport tomatoes.
  • Königsberg is excellent for salting in barrels, canning, making salads, juices, tomato paste or ketchup. Delicious vegetables with a pronounced tomato aroma, saturated with useful substances, are pleasant to eat fresh.
  • High yield is a distinctive feature of the Konigsberg variety. Vegetable growers who have been growing tomatoes on their site for more than one year claim that up to three buckets of vegetables are harvested from one bush. The yield declared by the manufacturer in the description of the variety is from 7 to 20 kg per 1 m2.

Tomato Golden Konigsberg

Koenigsberg subspecies

Due to its unpretentiousness and resistance to unfavorable climatic conditions, high yields and amazing taste, the variety has become well-deserved popularity among summer residents. This prompted breeders to breed two more species: gold and heart-shaped.

  • The golden Konigsberg tomato tastes the sweetest of the three varieties, it contains the largest amount of sugars. Due to the sweetness and bright yellow color of the fruit, the variety received a second name - "Siberian apricot".
  • Heart-shaped Königsberg is distinguished by large pink heart-shaped fruits. In the lower part of the bush, tomatoes of this variety grow up to 1 kg. The closer to the top of the bush, the smaller the fruits, but not less than 150 g.

Features of agricultural technology

Königsberg tomatoes, like many other plants with a long ripening period, are best grown in seedlings. By planting tomatoes in this way, you can get the first fruits in the middle of summer. The rules for growing and caring for these unpretentious plants will not cause difficulties even for inexperienced gardeners, therefore Kenisberg is often advised for beginners.

Seed preparation and planting

The seeds can be purchased at the store or harvested from your own harvest. When choosing seed material, it is better to give preference to products of well-known companies that have proven themselves in the market, for example, "Gavrish", "Sedek", "Aelita".Seeds packed by hand in paper bags are cheaper, but no one can guarantee their quality.

Many summer residents trust only self-collected seeds. Kenisberg is not a hybrid, so it is quite possible to select seeds from your favorite tomatoes.

Preparations for planting begin in mid-March. The seeds are disinfected by placing them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 2-3 hours. To speed up germination, they are soaked in a growth stimulator overnight.

Earthen mixture is poured into a box or peat pots, spilled with water and the seeds are spread at a distance of 1 cm from each other. A layer of earth 1 cm thick is poured on top and again watered. The boxes are covered with plastic wrap or glass and placed in a warm place. No light is needed at this stage of growing.

As soon as the first shoots appear, the boxes must be opened and placed on a windowsill or other bright place. The formation of two true leaves means that it's time to do a dive.

Seedlings Kenisberg are distinguished by some lethargy, lifelessness. Do not be upset in advance, this is a normal process characteristic of this variety.

Transplanting

Seedlings are planted in open ground after about 15 May, as soon as the danger of return frosts has passed. When choosing the timing of planting, one must be guided by the climatic conditions of the region.

In order for the bushes to take root better and more easily tolerate the contrast between day and night temperatures, which is always noticeable in early summer, the seedlings must be hardened. To do this, two weeks before planting, boxes with sprouts are taken out into the street for several hours a day.

The soil in the beds or in the greenhouse is prepared in advance. They dig up and loosen the soil, bring mullein, disinfect. The planting is carried out according to the 70x100 scheme, that is, at least 70 cm is left between the plants in a row, 1 meter between the rows.

Plant care

One of the main characteristics of the plants of this variety is unpretentiousness. Konigsberg tomatoes do not require special care, they are grown according to the general scheme.

  • Watering and loosening

Tomatoes are rarely watered, but abundantly - so that water is kept in the hole for some time. They pour it at the root, trying not to get on the stems and leaves, since putrefactive processes develop faster on wet foliage.

To ensure a normal supply of oxygen to the roots, the soil is loosened after watering and covered with mulch. This will prevent the topsoil from drying out.

  • Bush formation

Tall bushes are one of the distinguishing features of indeterminate varieties. To prevent the plants from breaking under the weight of the fruit, they must be tied up. This can be done using special tools or ordinary stakes.

So that the bush does not grow in width and does not form too much foliage and shoots, but spend energy exclusively on fruits, it must be properly formed. This work is carried out throughout the entire period of growing tomatoes - from planting to harvesting.

Usually the plant is formed into one or two stems. The two most powerful shoots are chosen, and the rest are regularly pinched. The sprouts to be removed are called stepchildren. It is important to pinch on time, until the stepsons have grown more than 3 cm, otherwise it will be difficult for the plant to withstand such a cardinal pinching.

  • Top dressing

Tall, powerful bushes require a lot of nutrients, so the soil around the plantings must be fertilized regularly. During the season, feeding is applied at least three times. To do this, use diluted mullein, compost, wood ash. You can use a commercially available complex fertilizer designed for feeding tomatoes.

Tomatoes of the Konigsberg variety are very fond of vegetable growers for their excellent taste, high yield, resistance to diseases and weather changes. Experts advise this unpretentious variety for beginners.
