How to apply the Calypso insecticide, from what pests does it save?
To protect vegetable and berry crops from pests (leaf rollers, flower beetles, aphids), the Calypso insecticide is often used. Its distinctive feature is high efficiency combined with safety not only for humans, but also for bees, beneficial bacteria, and plants themselves.
Active ingredient and purpose of the agent
The drug is available in the form of ampoules (5 or more pieces in 1 package). They contain an aqueous suspension (2 ml in 1 ampoule) of the active ingredient - thiacloprid. It enters the insect's body, after which it enters the intestines and blocks the transmission of impulses to the nervous system. As a result, after a few hours, the pests completely die.
The drug is used to combat various pests that appear on plants:
- tomatoes;
- potatoes;
- cabbage;
- garlic;
- onions;
- strawberries, strawberries;
- apple tree;
- grapes;
- cherry;
- cherry;
- peaches.
Thanks to the use of this insecticide, it is possible to cope with most of the known pests of cultivated plants:
- aphids;
- Colorado potato beetle;
- leaf roll;
- scoops;
- weevil;
- moth moth;
- onion fly;
- cherry fly;
- whitewash;
- flea beetles;
- leaf beetles;
- onion thrips;
- onion moth.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Calypso insecticide
The experience of summer residents shows that the drug has several advantages at once:
- Effective protection against insect pests, as well as against late blight (fungal infection of potatoes, tomatoes and other plants). Pests die very quickly and massively.
- Stimulating the growth of crops, a quick set of green mass. Thanks to this, it is possible not only to protect the plants, but also to increase their productivity.
- The drug can also be used to protect indoor plants.
- It is enough to carry out 1 or maximum 2 treatments, since the protective period is at least a month.
- The product can be used in combination with other known insecticides.
- Safe for bees.
However, it also has some disadvantages:
- Basically it is effective against flower beetles and leafworms, that is, it does not have a universal effect on various pests.
- Also, the drug has a rather narrow range of effects - it can only process individual crops listed above.
- Despite the relative safety, processing must be carried out carefully and with the use of protective equipment. Some substances can be harmful to human health.
- The substances that make up the drug are potentially hazardous to fish and other river animals.
It is also important to understand that repeated use of the product on the same crops leads to the development of pest resistance. That is, over time, they acquire baboutGreater resistance to the effects of a toxic substance, which makes it less effective. Therefore, in subsequent seasons, "Calypso" is desirable to use in combination with other insecticides.
Instructions for use
The treatment is carried out in clear calm weather (wind or rain will quickly remove the remaining solution from the surface of the leaves). Also, do not spray in hot weather. If the day is hot enough, the treatment is best done in the evening, at sunset.
You need to start the procedure immediately after the first signs of damage appear:
- weak leaves;
- visual detection of larvae and adults of insects;
- the buds become brown and cannot bloom, the edges of the petals become torn;
- ovaries fall off;
- swelling and other extraneous formations form on the surface of the leaves;
- plants become lethargic and lagging behind in development.
Instructions for using the product are quite simple - you need to prepare a solution. To do this, open the ampoule and dilute its contents first with a small amount of water:
- for the treatment of indoor plants - 0.5 ml of the drug per 1 liter of water;
- for processing agricultural crops - 2 ml of the drug per 1 liter of water.
Then the contents must be diluted so that the result is 10 liters (standard bucket) of the finished solution. This amount is enough to process 1 are. The exact dosage depends on the specific crops.
Culture | The amount of solution, liters per 1 hundred square meters | Number of treatments |
---|---|---|
Apple tree | 6-10 | 1 |
tomatoes | 5-6 | |
potatoes | ||
cabbage* | ||
onion* | ||
garlic* | ||
grapes | 8-12 | 2 |
* For the treatment of these cultures, a more concentrated solution is prepared - 4 ml of the drug per 10 liters of water.
To treat indoor plants, it is enough to dissolve 0.5 ml of the product in 1 liter of water and proceed in the same way. It is better to calculate in advance the required volume of the finished solution so that later you do not pour the residues into the sewer - the components of the insecticide are dangerous for fish and other aquatic animals.
The drug is applied to the plant by spraying (from a spray bottle). It is necessary to carry out the procedure during the growing season, i.e., active growth. In the case of fruit trees, processing is carried out during the period of separation of the buds.
The first results become noticeable after a few days (for fruit trees - after 5-7 days, similarly for berries, for grapes - after 1.5 months).
Processing must be carried out no later than 1–1.5 months before the expected harvest.
Usually 1 spraying is enough, but in rare cases - subject to the massive spread of pests - secondary treatment is carried out.
Safety and storage rules
"Calypso" refers to low-hazard insecticides (class 3). But its constituent components still pose a certain threat to human health, therefore, during processing, it is necessary to observe precautions:
- Spraying should be carried out with glasses, a special gown and gloves.
- The dishes where the solution was prepared must be thoroughly rinsed and not used for food purposes.
- During processing, exclude children and animals from entering the site.
- Eliminate the ingress of the solution into water bodies and sewers. Pour the rest of the drug into the ground.
- Do not carry out manual treatment of the area within 10-14 days after spraying the drug. That is, at this time, it is not worth doing weeding, hilling, both manually and with the help of tools. Watering is allowed at any time.
- If the solution comes into contact with the skin, rinse thoroughly.
- If the drug gets in your eyes, rinse them under running water.
- If swallowed, take 1-2 tablets of activated carbon and drink water.
- If you feel unwell, seek immediate medical attention.
It can be stored at room temperature in conditions of moderate humidity and lack of direct sunlight (maximum period is 3 years). Exclude children's access. Do not store near food and medicine.
A review of the Calypso insecticide shows that it is a fairly effective agent that helps to cope with most of the known pests and at the same time is relatively safe for humans. The mixture is consumed economically even when processing large areas, so the drug is available for almost all summer residents.
