Harm from ants in the garden

Ants are part of the ecosystem, they exist everywhere. In one or another number of these insects can be found on any garden plot, and their complete absence should not please, but alert the summer resident: ants avoid soils poisoned by chemicals and areas with high groundwater.

Predatory insects, which include the inhabitants of the anthill, bring certain benefits in the country. They improve the mineral composition of the soil, increasing the content of phosphorus and potassium in it, daily destroy a huge number of caterpillars, flies, larvae and pest clutches. In turn, ants are also part of the food chain and serve as food for birds. On tenacious paws, these workers are able to carry seeds, which contributes to the reproduction of plants.

Under favorable conditions for them, ants begin to multiply quickly and actively disperse over the nearby territory. As a result, the harm from insects exceeds the benefits they bring - they begin to:

  • damage fruits with a high sugar content (tomatoes, beets, strawberries);
  • spoil the appearance of lawns and flower beds;
  • destroy flowers of roses and peonies, eating buds;
  • influence the acidity of the soil towards its increase;
  • to settle aphids on the site;
  • destroy trees.

In addition, ants are capable of attacking people and pets to defend their clutch, and their bites are quite painful. Having multiplied strongly, insects can move into the house, creating additional problems.

It is difficult to say who first appears in the summer cottage, aphids or ants, but the symbiosis of these insects is especially troubling for summer residents. Aphids can cause colossal damage to plantings.

That is why it is necessary to fight both species at once. After all, aphids will inevitably attract new colonies of ants to the garden, and they will begin to protect it from natural enemies and provide females with a comfortable wintering in the anthill in order to have an uninterrupted source of food.

Options for using pepper for ants

Red and black ground pepper can be used in the garden from ants. Because of its hotness, red is considered more effective.

It is very simple to use dry powder: it is scattered around the perimeter of flower beds and vegetable beds. The fight will be more effective if you take steps to find the nest and then sprinkle the pepper directly on it. Ant trails will also need to be covered with powder.

Before processing, you should protect your respiratory tract from the ingress of corrosive dust using a respirator or cloth bandage on the mouth and nose area.

Spraying plants with pepper solution

Alternatively, you can prepare a liquid decoction. This requires:

  1. add 50 g of ground pepper to 1 liter of water;
  2. boil over low heat for an hour;
  3. pour the finished broth into a bucket and fill the remaining volume with water (you should get 10 liters of the composition);
  4. add 2 tbsp to the broth. l. liquid or 40 g of crushed laundry soap;
  5. let the product stand for 2-3 days.

The broth is used for processing in the morning and evening hours, in dry weather. It is necessary to thoroughly spray all aboveground parts of plants (shoots and leaves, tree trunks) and the ground around. Due to the addition of soap to the composition, the pepper decoction remains on the vegetation longer. If it rains soon after treatment, it will need to be repeated.

Vinegar for ants

How else to deal with ants folk remedies?

You can get rid of ants in the area in other ways. From environmentally friendly products, they have proven themselves well:

  • Boiling water. Summer residents consider this barbaric method justified when the ants are very annoying. The destruction of the anthill is best done in the evening, when its inhabitants gather in their house. It is necessary to boil a bucket of water and pour it onto the anthill. As a result, not only insects die, but also their eggs. To enhance the effect, you can add 1/2 cup of tobacco dust, chopped head of garlic, or 3 tbsp. To the water before boiling. l. dried celandine.
  • Vinegar. The method is also used when an anthill is found. The pile of ant is poured with vinegar and covered with plastic wrap for several hours. During this time, insects die.
  • Kerosene. Ants are very sensitive to strong odors. You can pour kerosene over their dwelling (do not set fire to it), the insects will certainly scatter.

In addition to radical methods, all kinds of deterrent agents are used. Near the anthill, you can put chopped tomato leaves, parsley, crushed charcoal, smoked herring head. Ants will leave the dwelling if turpentine or vegetable oil is poured around it, sprinkle salt on their house.

Supporters of humane methods can put the anthill in a bucket (you need to act quickly) and take it to the forest or just away from their site.

Ants do not like the smell of marigolds, onions, garlic, lavender, mint. If these plants are planted on the site, insects will be present in minimal numbers. The smell of wormwood scares off ants - the plant can be picked and scattered in the aisles in the garden.

Thunder-2 from ants

Use of chemicals

Some people prefer to act with confidence and for this purpose they use chemical preparations against ants. The effectiveness of such funds is due to the presence in their composition of toxic substances - diazinon and chlorpyrifos. These are fairly stable chemical compounds that do not decompose in the soil for a long time (up to 120 days), therefore, before using them, it is necessary to properly weigh the pros and cons.

Ant drugs:

  • "Absolute" - gel (consumption –125 ml per 30 sq. M.), The effect is achieved in 1.5–2 weeks;
  • "A great warrior" - gel (consumption - 30 ml per 1 sq. M), kills insects in 1–2 days;
  • "Thunder-2" - granules, (consumption - up to 3 g per anthill), the effect can be obtained in 2-4 days;
  • "Ant-eater" - emulsion concentrate (1 ml of the preparation is diluted in 10 l of water), insects die within 1-2 days from the moment of treatment;
  • "Muravyin" - granules (consumption - 20 g per 10 sq. M.), Destroys ants in 3-5 days.

No less effective are "Medvetoks", "Muratsid", "Delicia", "Anti-Ant".

Still, one should not wage such a merciless fight with ants - you risk upsetting the natural balance, which will cause the garden to be flooded with other insects, even more harmful. It is better to leave chemical means as a last resort, and to begin with, use red and black pepper, aromatic herbs, salt, vinegar.
