How Victoria differs from strawberries and strawberries: in appearance, taste and in terms of science
Sweet red berries-many-nuts are not called: strawberry, wild strawberry, Victoria berry - what's the difference? It turns out that strawberries and strawberries are two different species from the common Strawberry genus, and Victoria is the first variety of garden strawberries obtained as a result of crossing. Each group of plants has its own characteristics.
Differences between cultures
Strawberries and strawberries are two different plant species, although they can be easily confused. They belong to the same Pink family, the Strawberry genus.
According to the old Russian tradition, strawberries are called some species of the Strawberry genus, in particular, nutmeg and pineapple strawberries. The name comes from the appearance of the fruit - they resemble tubers. Most often, strawberries are called garden berry plantings.
Strawberries include wild and domesticated species. The name is associated with the fact that flowers and fruits are close to the ground (from the old Russian "strawberry").
There are notable botanical differences between the two species:
- Strawberry is a dioecious plant. To obtain a harvest in the garden, gardeners plant about a quarter of the male bushes of this species. They do not bear fruit, but participate in pollination. Strawberries are monoecious, which means that there are no problems with pollination, the berries ripen on all bushes without exception.
- Strawberries are very small in stature, their bushes barely reach 25-30 cm from the ground. And the strawberry bush is slightly larger - it grows up to 40 cm.
- It is easy to distinguish a strawberry bush by the height of the peduncle: it is located above the leaves. And to find fruits from strawberries, you have to bend over and push the foliage with your hands.
- Strawberries have more pubescent petioles and leaves.
- Large-fruited strawberries are most often popularly called strawberries or Victoria. Strawberries have small elongated berries, especially in wild species.
- The strawberry yield is higher.
- Strawberries and strawberries differ in color. In strawberries, the fruits can be poured to a scarlet and even purple hue. Also, real strawberries rarely have a uniform color, since the berries are filled with color from the side facing the sun.
- Another difference can be seen when the berry is cut. Strawberries are evenly colored inside, and garden strawberries have a light stem in the center.
- Garden strawberries are sometimes sour and reminiscent of kiwi, while strawberries are always very sweet.
- The process of peeling strawberries is always easier, since the sepals are easily separated from the berries. Removing them from the strawberry fruit takes effort.
The most useful is wild meadow or forest strawberries. And the most fragrant is the musky strawberry. Both the leaves and the berries of this culture have a pungent smell.
The difference in crop care
Strawberries are very sensitive to cold and shade. It dries in direct sunlight, and bears fruit very abundantly in good diffused light. Strawberries are much more unpretentious than their sister in this matter.
Both crops do not tolerate wetlands and generally high humidity.
Strawberries are much more difficult to pollinate, this requires insects and the planting of heterosexual bushes. With strawberries, such problems will not arise.
Advice to the gardener
According to the tradition of crop rotation, strawberries and strawberries are not planted one after another, as well as after potatoes and nightshades. Good predecessors are carrots, radishes, herbs.
Otherwise, the care of crops is similar: it is moderate watering, loosening and mulching the soil, applying fertilizers, etc.
What is Victoria
Victoria is the name of the first variety of garden strawberries, which was brought to Russia at the end of the 18th century. The Victoria variety gradually gained popularity and displaced ordinary strawberries from the plots, as it gave larger and more aromatic fruits. As a result, this name was fixed among the people for all varieties of large-fruited strawberries.
The difference is obvious: Victoria is a bred variety, strawberries are a natural species.
Interestingly, the pure Victoria variety is no longer found on the plots. It is not registered as a cultivar in our country. The Victoria group means various varieties of garden strawberries with very large and sweet berries, high yields and unpretentious care.
It cannot be said which berry is better - strawberry, strawberry or Victoria. Many gardeners experiment with growing multiple plants in the same area. Pollination will not affect the taste characteristics of each variety in any way. But it is better not to place more than 4 varieties close to each other.
An experienced summer resident can distinguish strawberries from strawberries, relying on botanical signs. This difference is not so significant, but knowledge can be useful for obtaining a bountiful harvest in the case of dioecious varieties.
