Raspberry transplant: when is it needed, what time of year and how to carry it out correctly
Over the years, raspberries can grow strongly over the site. The roots deplete the soil, and nutrients are no longer enough for abundant fruiting. This is not the only disadvantage of thickened plantings. Gardeners have adapted to replanting raspberries every few years. In order to please the bushes in a new place with large and sweet berries, you will have to take into account the season, soil and other points.
Why and how often do you need a transplant
Raspberry transplant is a necessary procedure to restore yields and maintain plant health. Main reasons:
- aging of the bush;
- initially an unfortunate place for a curtain.
Aging
Usually the bush bears fruit for 5 to 12 years, but over time, even with regular fertilization, the deep layers of the soil are depleted and can no longer feed the overgrown bushes.
When is it time to think about a raspberry transplant:
- If fruiting has dropped sharply, the berries become small and have lost their flavor characteristics.
- If raspberries have been growing in one place for more than 10 years.
- If the plantings are too thick and difficult to care for.
If you start a raspberry tree, due to a lack of light and high humidity, fungal diseases and pests may appear. The epidemic will quickly hit the bushes, and you will have to dig everything up and destroy. It is better to play it safe and transplant the strongest bushes, carry out the rejuvenation procedure and find the best conditions for further cultivation.
Unsuitable conditions
Other reasons for transplanting to a new place are the initially poorly chosen area for the raspberry tree. The bushes, when moved to optimal conditions, start growing and delight with the harvest the next year.
What raspberries don't like:
- constant shadow;
- high humidity;
- drafts;
- poor soil;
- close occurrence of groundwater.
When is it better to transplant raspberries: in autumn or spring
For warm regions, planting and transplanting raspberries in the fall is preferable. From September, about 1-2 months before the arrival of frost, the bushes are moved to a new place. Before the onset of winter, the raspberry root system has time to adapt and get stronger. A good harvest can be expected next summer.
At the same time, spring planting is not recommended for southern plantations. Raspberries need some time in the cool to take root. If you drop it just before the heat hits, it will die. A seedling under the sun will begin to actively grow greens, without having time to take root.
In cold latitudes, the opposite is true. A long spring with cool days is ideal for rooting. Summer landing is also possible. But do not move raspberries in the fall: due to early frosts, the bushes will not have time to take root.
Rely on the climatic features of your region, follow the weather forecast:
- In the middle lane, the interval of raspberry transplants is from late April to early June or September.
- In Siberia and the Urals - May, late summer or early autumn.
- In the southern regions, you can plant and transplant shrubs in the second half of September.
Important
Be guided by the state of the raspberry tree when planning a transplant. The procedure is carried out in the spring after swelling of the buds, but strictly before the appearance of young foliage and even more flowers and ovaries. Autumn transplant - after harvest.
Feature of raspberry transplant in summer:
- On hot days, the procedure is scheduled for early morning or late evening.
- Repot your bushes during the hot season only if absolutely necessary.
Place for transfer
When planting raspberries in a new location, find out which plant prefers:
- Raspberries are harmed by the accumulation of moisture in the soil. It's not only about watering, but also about the terrain. Choose flat, preferably elevated areas, and never plant berry bushes in lowlands where rainfall flows.
- The varieties of soils most suitable for raspberries are sandy loam and loam. Acidity is weak or neutral. Looseness, fertility and good drainage are necessary conditions for the health of the curtain.
- The shade is detrimental to the bushes, as well as direct sunlight. In the first case, the shoots are stretched and deformed, in the second, the green mass burns out. Place the raspberry tree in light partial shade.
- Do not forget to plant the bushes at a distance from each other so that all specimens have enough food.
- Protect berry plantings from drafts by placing them near buildings, fences or hedges. In this case, the barriers should not create a permanent shadow.
Crop rotation
Plant it after cruciferous, pumpkin, and legumes.
Good predecessors:
- lupine,
- calendula,
- marigold,
- onion,
- garlic.
The best siderates are rye, oats, alfalfa.
Bad predecessors for the raspberry tree:
- Strawberry,
- strawberries,
- potatoes,
- peppers,
- eggplant,
- you should not plant a new raspberry tree in the place of the old one.
All stages of transplantation
This instruction takes into account all possible stages of preparation and transplantation of raspberries. It is not necessary to fulfill all the conditions, take into account the condition of the bushes, soil and the design of the site as a whole.
The soil for spring planting is prepared in the fall. For disembarkation in September, preparatory procedures begin in 2-3 weeks. These are the latest dates. If you are thinking about the placement of raspberries in advance, then start preparing the soil in 2 years, planting siderates.
Too acidic needs to be alkalized, alkaline - acidified. Here are simple soil additives that will correct acidity:
- To reduce acidity, the soil is dug up with the addition of wood ash, dolomite flour or slaked lime.
- For acidification, coniferous needles, horse peat, sphagnum, leaf compost are introduced into the ground.
Advice
Check the acidity of the soil with a pH tester.
Before transplanting raspberries, prepare a supply of nutrients for them. In autumn, organic matter is introduced into the soil - 10 kg per 1 m2, wood ash or superphosphate - 1 glass each.
How to transplant a raspberry bush correctly:
- Examine the samples. Bushes with a stem diameter of 1 cm or more are suitable for transplanting. It is good when there are a lot of buds on raspberries, such a plant easily propagates by division.
- Select woody stems for autumn transplanting.
- After relocation, the raspberry bush starts growing. To prevent the green mass from depleting it, gardeners carry out preliminary pruning. The shrub formation procedure is required. So the harvest will be as plentiful and tasty as possible. In spring or autumn, cut off the main stem in advance, leaving 60-70 cm. Remove excess growth.
- Dig up the raspberries along with the clod. Water the garden soil generously before doing this. First, make the markings with a shovel, sticking it vertically into the ground, while slightly receding from the bush. After that, dig out, being careful not to touch the roots.
- Divide the shrub into several equal parts with your hands, using a pruner or a garden knife.
- Roots before planting in a new place should not remain bare. The fertilizers applied will burn them. Spread them out and dip them in a thick mixture of clay and mullein.
- The soil must be loose. Gardeners do this: they dig out 40 cm of garden soil and mix it with sand and humus in equal proportions.
- In the new area, place the bushes at intervals of 50-70 cm in a row and 1.5 m between rows. The depth of the landing pit is 45 cm, the width is 60 cm.
- Embed the bush by 2-3 cm. The root collar should remain on the soil surface - this is the place where the stem becomes lighter.
- Lastly, fill the holes with soil mixture, tamp a little and water abundantly.
To make the roots stronger faster, immediately after planting, the soil around the raspberry bush is mulched with sawdust, peat and humus.The same measure will allow the root system to maintain optimal moisture content, protect the underground part from overheating and hypothermia.
After transplant
Raspberries transplanted to a new place are taken care of according to standard rules. It is necessary to water the bushes in a timely manner (once a week), loosen and mulch the soil. It is also important to apply fertilizers - organic matter and mineral complexes.
In the first days after transplanting, raspberries need a little shading, especially if it's hot and sunny outside. It is recommended to install the pegs and pull the fabric over them - to hide the landings.
To prevent the shoots from bending under their own weight, they are tied to wooden supports.
If you take into account all the requirements of raspberries, then the result will amaze your imagination, you will be expected from 5 kg of berries per bush, depending on the variety.
