This is not the first time you hear from gardeners you know about how good the seedlings are in diapers, but can you hardly imagine what this whole process of diaper looks like and what is good about it? Well, it is not at all difficult to join the trend of growing seedlings in Moscow style: we will tell you how to get healthy, strong plants for planting in the ground in a minimum amount of time, practically without cost and without much effort.

Is it worth swaddling seedlings?

Why is everyone praising this method of planting seeds so much, forcing more and more summer residents to experiment, forgetting about the garden classics in the form of juice bags and huge boxes for seedlings? There are several very compelling reasons for this.

  • "Diapers", which, say in advance, are plastic wrap, can be used an infinite number of times. Washed, dried and put in a box to wait for the next season.
  • Both rolled "diapers" with plants on the windowsill, and sheets folded for storage take up clearly less space than boxes or, even worse, small containers.
  • Here another plus comes to light: this very small container does not need to be collected or made by hand. No glasses of yoghurt or sour cream, and you don't even need to waste time gluing the bags from the film: take it and plant it!
  • The cost of the entire changing process in relation to the quality and convenience of germination is so low that, quite possibly, manufacturers peat tablets, pots and other garden lotions will simply go broke.
  • In this way, you can germinate almost any crop that needs germination. There are a lot of successful experiments in the network with eggplants, cucumbers, cabbage, peppers, various types of flowers, and, of course, tomatoes.
  • Such bags are easiest to transport to the landing site, as they can be tamped very tightly and they will not fall and crumble.
  • And the most important thing in this method is the ability to avoid injury to the fragile root system of a young plant.

I can't wait to find out how miraculously the root remains safe and sound? Take your time, we'll tell you everything in order.

Advice

When choosing a film for growing seedlings, give preference to a thick greenhouse plastic film, but to get seedlings it is better to choose a slightly thinner film or use a plastic bag at all.

Growing seedlings in a diaper way

Let's immediately figure out at what stage this growing method can be applied, because the preparatory process and planning of further actions depend on it. Let's be honest, you're in luck: the "diaper" will be an excellent home for your future harvest from seed to planting! Also in such "diapers" you can plant sprouts grown in any way. Including hydroponics, which we will discuss below.

So stocked up with plastic wrap, scissors, soil, seeds and rubber bands? Let's go then!

  • Cut the film into rectangles about the size of a notebook sheet.
  • Pour 2-3 tablespoons of moistened soil into the upper left corner and place the seed there.
  • Now fold the bottom of the "diaper", roll it into a roll and secure it with elastic bands. Just do not roll too tightly, otherwise the plants will lack oxygen.
  • We compact the finished cylinders in a bucket or other similar container and put them in a warm, bright place.
  • Before sprouting, you can cover the container with "diapers" with a film, but here either perforation or daily ventilation for half an hour is required.
  • Water the seedlings with a weak solution of mineral fertilizers as needed.
  • With the appearance of 2-3 leaves, the sprout will become cramped, and it will need to be swaddled. To do this, unfold the film, add 1-2 tablespoons of earth to it and swaddle again, but this time without turning the bottom.

Actually, in this form, the seedlings will exist until they are planted in the ground, where they are placed directly from the "diaper". This is the secret of whole roots! Although, of course, nothing prevents you from diving it into separate containers at the changing stage, if you deem it necessary.

Advice

Do not label the diapers with the names of the variety: it will be problematic to reuse them for growing some other crop next year. Instead, number them and make a note of what variety each of the numbers will represent this season. It is easiest to number with a pen or permanent marker: they will not rub off and rinse off with water.

Getting sprouts with the "diaper"

If you are imbued with the concept of changing seedlings, try to get sprouts with it, even if you plan to plant them in individual containers later. This method is good because the growth dynamics is clearly visible in the film, and if some seeds do not sprout, then you will not be sorry for the space and soil spent on them. And all because there is no soil in this method at all.

  • Cut the film into strips 10 cm wide and about 30 cm long.
  • Place a strip of toilet paper on top and spray it with a spray bottle.
  • Spread out the seeds, retreating 1.5-2 cm from the top edge, with a distance of 3-4 cm.
  • Cover them with another layer of damp paper and another strip of plastic on top.
  • Roll up the roll, without bending the bottom, and place it in some container with water so that the toilet paper is 1-2 cm submerged in water.
  • Cover the roll with a cut bottle or foil with holes, put it in a warm place and wait for the first shoots.
  • As soon as the first shoots hatch, feed them with fertilizer with humic acids in a proportion 2 times less than indicated on the package. When the first true leaf appears, repeat the feeding.
  • When it's time for a dive, you simply unfold the diaper and, pinching off the sprout right with toilet paper, transplant it into an individual container. Voila! And you don't have to pick anything with a toothpick and split it, damaging the root system.

By the way, due to the lack of soil, your seedlings will not hurt with a black leg, and it will have more time to get stronger.

Advice

If the question is whether to pinch the root or not, think about the soil. In the summer, it is constantly dry, and you find it difficult to water the crops often? Then it is better to let the root go into the depths and feed on groundwater. Is there usually enough moisture in the upper layers? Then boldly pinch - let it grow!

It seems that growing seedlings has never been so compact and convenient, and most importantly, sparing! It remains to stock up on the necessary materials, but in terms of information, you are already savvy and completely ready for the garden season.
