Unusual tomato Truffle red: features of the variety with the mushroom name
Red truffle tomato is a mid-season variety for growing in open ground and in a greenhouse. It was withdrawn in Russia and entered in the register in 2002. Over the years, tomatoes have shown themselves not only in an unusual shape, but also in resistance to diseases and pests. The red truffle justifies its purpose for outdoor cultivation: it is not afraid of cold snaps and other climatic troubles.
Description
Although the name Japanese Truffle is found, these tomatoes were bred by Russian breeders. Japanese truffle tomatoes will diversify your salads and pickles. Such tomatoes have an unusual shape that resembles truffles, pears, and a light bulb.
The group of these varieties includes both traditional red tomatoes and fruits of other colors:
- tomato Truffle yellow, or gold - bright, large and very useful, characterized by increased sweetness;
- tomato Black truffle - a productive bush with brown fruits, which are considered the most useful: they have a high content of vitamins K, PP and group B;
- Truffle pink - has a delicate pink color, density, good in preservation;
- Orange truffle - faster ripening and larger fruits up to 200 g.
The most popular of the group is the Red Truffle. It usually begins with the acquaintance of gardeners with exotic tomatoes.
Description of the Truffle red variety:
- Bred for cultivation in the garden, grows well under film shelters. They are required to protect plantings in the northern regions.
- Determinant bush, compact - up to 50-70 cm in height.
- Ripening time is average, from 100 to 120 days.
- Up to 7 fruits are poured in one brush.
- Average or high yield - 6-8 kg per bush.
Taste characteristics
Truffle tomatoes are easily recognizable by their droplet shape. The fruits are slightly ribbed with a smooth, shiny skin. Tomatoes are distinguished by dense, fleshy pulp, sweet taste with a slight sourness. The juiciness is average, within 4-5 seed chambers. The crop is used both for conservation due to its small size, and fresh in vegetable cuts, salads, added to soups and side dishes.
Truffle fruits have good shelf life - up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, and all thanks to the dense skin. The average weight of a tomato is 120-150 g.
Advantages and disadvantages
The characteristics of the variety that helped him gain a foothold in various parts of our country:
- good yield for open ground, including in Siberia and the Urals;
- a strong root system that is able to provide nutrition for all ripening fruits;
- resistance to bacterial infections;
- and also - to the main fungal diseases characteristic of open field tomatoes;
- low attractiveness to harmful insects;
- resistance to temperature changes;
- pretty fruit shape;
- long-lasting presentation;
- excellent taste.
Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting the exactingness of the variety for care: strict watering rules and top dressing, as well as a garter, are necessary for Truffle for a stable yield and health of the bush. Due to the average juiciness, they are not suitable for making juice and tomato paste.
Growing features
It is recommended to grow tomatoes of medium ripening for open ground by the seedling method:
- The seeds are sown in March. The soil for germination is prepared from equal parts of peat, manure and sod land. To disinfect the soil, it is treated with drugs such as "Fitosporin".
- To increase the likelihood of germination, seeds are bought in reliable stores, and growth stimulants are also used. The planting material is soaked, for example, in "Epine-extra": for 100 ml of water - 1-2 drops of the drug, soak the seeds for 4-6 hours, dry.
- After planting, the seeds are watered with warm water, covered with foil and kept in a warm room with a temperature of up to +25 degrees.
- When the shoots appear, the film is removed, and the tomatoes are moved to a cooler place (+ 15-16 for 5-7 days, then + 20-22 degrees).
- For seedlings to develop, they are given a sufficient amount of light.
- The pick is carried out at the stage of 1-2 true leaves.
- The sprouts are ready to move into the ground at the stage of 6-7 true leaves or 60-65 days after germination.
Truffle tomatoes tolerate outdoor conditions well, but for maximum comfort and high yields, they can also be planted in film greenhouses. In the northern regions, preference should be given to the second cultivation method.
Features of cultivation after settling on open or protected beds:
- When transplanting, it must be borne in mind that the powerful root system of truffle tomatoes requires a lot of space. No more than 2-3 bushes are placed on one bed with an interval of about 0.5 m.
- For better productivity, it is recommended to form a bush in 2-3 stems. If the main shoot ceases to bear fruit, the substitutes take the baton.
- Despite its compactness, the bush still requires a garter.
- The first flower raceme is formed over 6-7 leaves. The plant takes a lot of energy to form the first inflorescence, but as soon as the first tomatoes begin to ripen, other ovaries begin to form more actively. The trick of gardeners to speed up fruiting is to remove the first inflorescence.
- Only warm water is used for irrigation. It is poured at the root, for one plant - 5-6 liters. Watering is the main difficulty in care: the soil should not dry out too much.
- Truffle tomatoes must be fed at the time of transplanting and then at early flowering period... The optimal fertilizer is complex, for example, superphosphate, nitrophoska.
Advice
You can also collect slightly reddened green fruits from the bush. They will ripen on their own after a while. If you put them in boxes and store them in a cool place, they will take up to 2 months to mature and store.
